And I went into a BB.. and.. I saw a tiny martini pendant in the window, and asked to see it.. and looked at the specs.. and.. wanted to barf.

So.. it was 14k white gold. Simple cable chain, but I found it was not a martini upon close inspection but this sort of basket looking thing with six prong surrounding this sad little diamond. The diamond was .29. So.. I then looked at the specs. Right.  Ew. So.. It SAID it was an F.. (right, and I'm a Princess) and it said it was an I1.. and yes, I agree.. cause it looked like spit. And THEN.. I looked at the price.. and REALLY wanted to barf. That little spit stone was just under $1300!!! I said to the nice lady who was proudly showing me spit in a cup, are you serious? She said, well it IS an F.. oh my stars girls and boys.. had you seen this "IDEAL" cut diamond you'd have found, like me, that it was lacking oh.. what's the word.. hm.. LIGHT? It was horrible and dark..

I will so never never never buy anything from a maul. Ever.

You're giving me fits of the giggles! I can just picture the nice lady holding her little pendant up like it's worth over a grand, and you pleasantly smiling and rolling your eyes. (Thinking the whole time, "The PSers aren't going to believe this s***!")

Hehehehe sounds some what like my maul experiences I really can't understand how people can buy those, it boggles. The colour seems to be the selling point really

I tried on a 1.5 ct ring at a local maul store and it had these two massive clouds that you could see from a distance without trying (literally looked like frozen spit) I was like ewwww no(and then like so this is what PS refers to as frozen spit :P). Another stone at a maul store I was not even given the opportunity to even try it own (obviously me and SO were not deemed good enough) 20k for a 1ct, I am just curious to know the specs of it ????

Amazing isn't it!  A few weeks ago, I had to try the mall thing because I had heard so many stories here.

So I happened to not be wearing my stud earrings that day (but I was wearing my newly set solitaire super ideal cut diamond ring).

I asked to see the studs and the woman pulled out a try of diamond studs.  I asked her about the cut.  she said they are round brilliant.  I said, I see that but what kind of cut are they.  she said they are round brilliant.  We went back and forth with this.  I told her I did not think she understood what I was asking. I said, you know, like good cut, or excellent cut, or ideal cut.  What is the quality of the cut.  She looked at me really annoyed at this poitn and said, Miss, I told you they are round ideal cut, can't you see that.  They are round.  Were you looking for another shape, princess perhaps?

Oh, and the price on one of these 1ct pairs, ugly cut was MORE than I paid for my 1.5ctw IDEAL cut earrings.

Amazing isn't it.  And the sad thing is that most people buy their jewelry this way.

Where I live, I see tons and tons of grimy, dirtly, dull stones.

It seems that once the mall stones are bought, most people do not clean them making them duller than they normally are.

I swear she had to get her little bottle of windex out to clean my jaw mark off the top of the case.. J-O-K-E.. I just kind of stood there, with this spit in my hand, frozen smile on my face.. uh huh uh huh.. well, wow, that's just.. wow, have a nice day. LOL

And.. I allllways think about PS when I go to oogle shiny stuff. I have learned so much here, PS has taught me so very much..

Mall stores make their money on high volume walk-in sales. It doesn't pay to educate the staff, or to stock better cut qualities because most customers shop by price and don't know one diamond from another, other than by shape and carat weight.

SDL, I assume you were looking at a "regular" stone there, not their Signature diamonds. I have a 5 stone Signature Diamond band from them and it's stunning. But I think the disparity between that line and their regular diamonds is huge...

I think the better stones are Ikuma? No, this was just a well.. ordinary kind of standard maul store diamond.

I've seen some fabulous AGS000 stones at BB.  The deal with that store is you have to ASK them about the great stones, not just pick any old pre-set piece from the case.  I've gone in there, seen crap and then talked to the sales associates and a few times now, the SA will pull out an inventory book and list diamonds with AGS000 cut and provide color and clarity and the prices will be MUCH better than the amount they quote for the low-grade stones.  It appears they almost punish those who do not know any better by selling them a pitch about icky stones being dynamite.

The Signature line is better too and the Ikuma are the Canadian stones they sell.  Both are more expensive than the AGS's they sell, but still are NOT EVEN possibly comparable to the terrible ones they showcase.

And THAT'S what I am always preachin' about, boys and girls!!!

Those stores appeal to the masses... the *average* consumer, who basically thinks, "A diamond is a diamond is a diamond...".  And THAT is why, when the newbies come around and think they HAVE to get high color and high clarity to get BEAUTY, I try to help them understand that 99 times out of 100, their GF is NOT gonna know OR care if her stone is a D or an E or an F, or an IF, VVS or a VS... just give her a killer CUT and use the rest of the budget for SIZE, babee, SIZE!     THATS what'll blow away all of her friends!!!

And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it!

The thug maul of course, Pkwy Plaza in El Cajon.. I never shop there without using a club on my car but its closest to home. I much prefer Fashion Valley (cause its awesome).. but.. the back roads to the mall are flooded today because of the rain.. doesn't take much, it all used to be under water anyway.

Do you know (little history lesson here) that Walt Disney chose Mission Valley for the site of Disneyland (the very site on which Fashion Valley sits right this moment).. and.. the city of San Diego told him NO..????!!! They just aren't very far sighted here I'm afraid..  Stupid, stupid, stupid..

Anyway......... yeah. I went there. lol

You know, I had a conversation [that I mentioned in another thread] with a Chanel cosmetics salesperson in a dept. store about one of my rings.

She grabbed my hand and said "what a fun ring" after looking at it briefly. I was confused and I asked her what she was talking about [I think I might have actually said "huh?" LOL!] Her comment in response was interesting and it has stayed with me [she was quite young - early 20's I would guess - no offense to you younger members]. She told me that she had never seen a diamond that that big [most people have not, I guess] and that she assumed it was a sim because she had not seen a stone that was so clear and had no black spots. The poor kid was pretty embarrassed.

It is scary what's out there as far as product! And the ads on TV that run during the holidays are disgusting with the poop [or frozen spit] they are pushing! People that don't know get so taken advantage of.

It is scary what's out there as far as product! And the ads on TV that run during the holidays are disgusting with the poop [or frozen spit] they are pushing! People that don't know get so taken advantage of.

That essentially applies to just about anything you buy But it does astound me that people will hand over such a large wad of cash with very little research, I figure most of these stores work on the sense of the emotionality of the product and the event.

Hmmm... I found PS when I was looking for a place to indulge in my (then) obsession with colored stones.  That obsession is waning... for now .  But...

you all are starting to inspire me to work my way through the diamond tutorial!  I think it's time to treat myself to some nice diamond earrings, and I'm now terrified that unless I do some serious preparation, I could end up with frozen spit stones.

Thanks for the kick in the pants, SDL!
