Background: my family has an "Ugly Tree Ornament Competition" each year at Christmas.  If memory serves, I win every year (or maybe I just like the idea of winning so much that I have selective memory?).  Last year I ended up making my own ornament (the $64 dollar gem found by a PSer was WAY to steep for my budget, which is more like $5-10).  So, let the fun begin, if you have any great suggestions, please share!

Matata, I was told I cheated last year because I made my own ornament, but that is too funny.

Skip, the taco is cracking me up, it's definitely in the running!!!  I knew you'd come through.  I want you to start this tradition with your family.

Ahhhhhhhhahahahaha! Those ornaments are so ugly, I can't stand it! I didn't know they made ugly ornaments!

We're having an ugly baby photo contest at work, this totally reminded me of that!

It's one of the big highlights of Christmas in my family.  Everyone but my hubby and I have already purchased their ornaments and are laughing about them, but keeping them secret, of course.  If you can find my thread from last year you'll certainly get a kick out of some of the things people came up with.

ETA: the competition has also resulted in the tradition of passing the most hideous, oversized fake rat -- my dad purchased it to scare my sister and mom at Halloween, and then decided to dress up as an ornament -- back and forth amongst my parents, my husband and myself from holiday to holiday.  It is now adorned with turkey feathers, a birthday sign, a t-shirt that says "Worlds Greatest Dad", 4th of July holiday beads, and other odd things.  I think he's being returned to us soon, and I look forward to what he has grown into...or perhaps I should be scared.  My mom claims he's been decorated enough to hide his ugliness, I don't think he's there quite yet.

OH, I wish my mom still had all of her uglies. Unfortunately, she lost all of her hideous Christmas ornaments when their house burnt down a few years ago.

Luckily enough, I was already married when the fire occurred, and so had been bestowed with my very own set of these handmade fantasies. Here is one of the dearest.

Yes, it IS a styrofoam ball. Yes, it has been hollowed out with the flaming hot lava end of a glue gun. Yes, it did stink terribly for days. Yes, that is a Christmas card cut up and placed ever so gently in the center of the crispity whiteness. Yes, it is plastic ribbon and plastic beads encircling the ball. And, Yes, it is hung my fishing line. Yes, it was used fishing line.

Maybe you could make something like this for your OWN tree.

ENJOY!

I shouldn't speak so badly about these grotesque things. My mom did her best to decorate a tree for us when we had no money. tsk tsk on me!

somethingshiny, the last time my mom's entire family got together for Thanksgiving (it was about 8 years ago) my grandmother arrived with several boxes in tow, all filled with her beloved Christmas ornaments that she wanted her children and grandchildren to go through and divide up "while she is still alive."  The collection included some of the most hideous things I've ever seen.  We were being nice, pretending to like them, picking our favorites so carefully.  She got mad at my uncle's wife, said "You're taking all of the GOOD ones" (umm, there are no "good ones").  It was quite a scene.

If the woman weren't still alive and wasn't going to be present at our next holiday I'm certain many of her lovelies would make an appearance in our competition.  But for now, we must be respectful.

I do have a pretty fantastic family, I must say.  I am a lucky lady to have been born into them.  And I encourage you to start the tradition with your own family, it is truly a hysterically fun time.

Lol...somebody posted this on the "want it now" section of ebay. Someone from your family perhaps?

Please help!

I am looking for an incredibly ugly Christmas ornament.
So ugly that when you look at it you think, "what the heck were they thinking when they made this thing?"

I'm not looking for one that's cheesy, tacky or a piece of junk and it should be ugly enough to fry one's retinas...

If you have an ornament laying around that you can't bear to hang on your tree, if it makes you shudder and cringe when you look at it, then that's what I'm looking for!

Thank you.

How about this cake?

OR this....thing.....I don't even know WHAT it is...half deer half man?

omg...LOVE the flying dragon thing in this one!

Edit...just realized the ugly half deer half man is $70!!! That's a whole lotta money for the ugliest ornament I've ever seen!

It doesn't compete with last years (cause that was REALLY something)... but is it a snow man? Is it an ince cream cone? Is it... ugly? or just confusing?

Lucky, the doll is cracking me up, but $70 is way too much, even for this fun competition!

Gyps, I think that scary thing from last year, at $64, is still for sale on ebay!!  That snowman, is, well a word I can't say here.  The frog looks quite robotic!  I dig it!  Marie's head is scary, a bit like that scary doll from The Twilight Zone!

I'm loving the ideas, keep them coming!

TG, those are pretty awfully fab.  My homemade ornament from last year was definitely a piece of work, not art, just work.

You know what I'd love to see?  An ugliest Christmas sweater contest.  Maybe I might have to suggest that to my inlaws.  Hehehehe.

This ornament is not only ugly (and creepy), it's overpriced by about $9.98. Seriously, who would start the bidding at $9.99 for this thing?

I saw your thread, Kimberly, and was so very thankful for the distraction right now, so here goes my "ugly" efforts:

ugly...it just says "ugly."

funky chicken...oh my, all sold out

nutty squirrel

Proper Penguin...he's sold out, too!

Wedding Cake

Wedding Couple

https://www.guild.com/artitem/36698.html

The country biker girl in me is particularly appalled by these next ones...

redneck

biker buddies

biker babes

Redneck Baby...this could be the ugliest one yet, and only $5.99!

Thanks for sharing your family's tradition with us again this year...I remember reading about this last year before I started posting on PS.  Your family sounds like they are a blast to be a part of.  Are they looking for another daughter by any chance???

ETA:  I think I fixed some of the links...the mermaid one is at the bottom of the first list now.  Sorry about that.
