I am looking for a friend to have 2 rings appraised and I was wondering if anyone could recomend an appraiser in Illinois.  I found one called 'Appraise this by Sookie' but I can not find any info on her.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Chicago Gem Lab

Lorraine Oakes is great to work with!

Professional Gem Sciences
5. South Wabash #1905

(I haven't used them personally but I know other PSers have)

Chicago Gem Lab is more of what I think of in terms of a traditional appraiser; knowledgable gemologist sitting down with a client and going over the ins and outs of a piece and using some equipment.

I think of Pro Gem as more of a "technical/scientific" operation. Lots of equipment and deep analysis going on there.

I wouldn't hesitate to use either one and would choose depending on what my need was, but if you have finished pieces it sounds like Lorraine is more suited to your project.  She has recently moved to a new suite in the building BTW (and of course I can't recall what it is now off the top of my head) so be sure to ask her that if you set up an appointment.

Thank you for the response.  I have a pricing question now.  My friend supposedly contacted Sookie and asked the price, and she said it would be $65 for the first item and $25 for each additional item.  Now I think the last time I had an appraisal done it was $75 per item, but I would never ever use them again, and I am not sure if this pricing is a little too cheap.

gg,

Pricescope is sort of an unusually strong resource.  I really think it would be fool hearty to not take advantage of the vendors who are vetted here.

DeeJay knows what she's talking about, and you can search on both of her referrals here.  Also, top right under Resources, you'll see Richard Drucker is additionally mentioned, and have gotten good praise here, too.

Not sure why you'd want to waste your time otherwise...considering you took the time to ask.

Then again...maybe the problem is that...if we knew Sookie...like you know Sookie (oh what a gal), we'd think differently.

But...we don't.

Regards,

Ira (Ruffles have Ridges) Z.

It depends on the items and how complex the appraisal is to be. Generic pricing ($65 and then $25) doesn't even come close to what it would cost to properly appraise two 1 carat plus diamond solitaires, for example.

What kind of rings does your friend have?

If I remember correctly Lorraine charges a fee per piece (although I do belive it might be more than $65) based on carate weight and intricacy of design.  She might have some multi item deal that she can offer but $25 seems very very inexpensive to me...

I do know that if you get an updated appraisal done on the same piece there is a reduced fee.  So, if you had a piece appraised today it would be $XX, but if you wanted to have it reappraised some years later, assuming nothing about the item had been changed of course, for insurance purposes it would be a much lesser amount.

Thank you Dee*jay for all of your input and I will be sure to pass on Lorraine's info to my friend.  Regular Guy, while I do appreciate your input on the matter I think that maybe I was a little confusing by giving you the impression that I personally know this Sookie lady (which is not the case). My friend is the one who contacted and spoke to her.
