How do I get the designer look with bed pillows? |

I'm in the process of redoing my bedroom. I have a new padded headboard. This is the first time I've had a "real" headboard. I'm trying to learn how to make my bed so it looks like the magazines but I'm having trouble with pillows. It's a queen sized bed and we have 4 sleeping pillows and currently 2 regular sized shams. Right now I'm stacking the sleeping pillows with 2 on each side of the bed. Then proping the shams up sort of on top of the. This looks wrong. If I put the shams in front angled against the sleeping pillows there is a lot of space between the top of the shams and the headboard. If I put the shams on top of the sleeping pillows angled to the headboard, it looks strange because the shams are too high. What am I doing wrong? Do the sleeping pillows need to be propped against the headboard instead of laying flat? (I don't have the option to put the sleeping pillows someplace else) Do I need different sized shams that are larger like Euro size or maybe more pillows? I was considering some bolster pillows but not sure what to do with those either. I see my bed mostly from the side rather than straight on if that helps. |

Two large Euro Squares go against the headboard - propped up straight against the headboard. Then put the sleeping pillows propped up in front of the Euros horizontally, and the next two propped up in front of those. Then a small boudoir (small rectangular) or bolster (small or medium length) on front of the sleeping pillows. That oughta do it! All the pillows should be propped up against the previous layer.

i have euro pillows that i use...i get 3 for a king size bed to cover the entire width (it bothers me when decorative pillows don't cover the whole bed). stand them up against the headboard or wall. then layer rectangular shams in front of them at an angle and then regular sleep pillows against that. then small boudoir if you have one. if i don't have euro shams i will start with the rectangular shams (3) then regular pillows. it seems to look pretty much like the catalog that way.

Actually, it looks better if you put the pillows you sleep on in the very back. Then layer your Euro shams, regular shams, and decorative throw pillows. There are different ways to make it look good. Even looking at the package that your comforter comes in will give you an idea. Sephora is the mothership! - diamondfan |

I like to use our sleeping pillows as an accent. But I put them through a workout before I do. Take the pillow and hold it out in front of you with both hands. give it a hard shake. This makes the pillow fall down to the closed end of the case. Then I fold the open end over like a wrapped present. You can get this pillow to appear to be a euro square...or any shape you need for filler. Sometimes I will display the pillow case fold over and make it look like the back of an envelope (v shaped). Always remember for another more lavish elegant look, karate chop the center top of the pillow edge and you will achieve another look in your layers of sleeping pillows (you need not spend $75 on a pillow-use what you have). You don't have to always have the longer pillows in back. You can have a smaller pillow peek out from behind a big one. No rules...just keep playing around. Oh, bring them out...3 to 4 feet from the head board. Make your layers come forth. Almost to the center of the bed. Fold your comforter/bedspread back so the fold layer is out in front of the stack of pillows. You want to achieve different textures/ different layers/ multiple interest for your eyes and the sense of fluffy comfort. An illusion. Really simple. Just let your sheets, your blankets and your cover all be seen by a series of folding over one over the other. DKS

We have 4 sleeping pillows as well (2 firm, 2 soft) and this is what I do: soft ones standing up against headboard euros in front of that then firm pillows then decoratives in the winter I fold down the comforter 15-18 inches so you can see it just below the pillows for the summer i have a light blanket that i fold back with the sheet ( I leave the sheet a little long on top so i can fold it under the folded blanket- I know confusing!) and I fold the comforter in thirds and lay it across the end of the bed. Take a look herefor more ideas.

I'm not crazy about a ton of dec pillows, (hate making the bed and then having to arrange all those pillows so I reserve that look for the guest bed), so on our KS bed I just do our two king sleeping pillows propped against the headboard, then 3 Euro pillows across. The Euro shams are the same color as the quilt that is folded down at the foot of the bed (no footboard) and in between you can see the striped coordinating duvet cover so there is plenty of contrast. I guess I'm a fan of keeping things simple when possible, and again for convenience's sake I don't like to "pillow to excess," LOL! For your QS bed, ID, I would suggest finding two KS sleeping pillows you and DH both like, and use those as your base, then add your QS sleeping pillows or Euro's and maybe a couple dec pillows. What size bed do you have? Do you have the correct number of pillows in the back to cover the span of the headboard? Try going on Macys.com and look at their beds with the shams and decorative pillows arranged. That should help. Good luck.

Ok, operation bed pillow is somewhat better. I did stand up the bed pillows BEHIND the shams and that looks better other than my sham pillows are not tall enough so I still see the bed pillows. So, I'm thinking euro shams or at least king size shams instead of the standard size I have now. I have some super squishy down pillows which will not stand up at all so I tried doorknob's wrap like a present plan and that seems to work. I can make cute little neckroll size pillows out of those. So, it's looking better folks. Thanks for the tips!

I have a padded headboard as well.... Against it I have 2 large silk square pillows which are propped up by the 'bumps' under the covers from our sleeping pillows (i tilt the sleeping pillows under the covers against the headboard so the big decorative pillows kind of get propped up against them), followed by 2 smaller pillows of a different material, colour tone and texture, finally 2 more even smaller pillows of a different, tone, texture.
