Ok, so I just got our certified copies of our marriage certificate in the mail. I went on to the Social Security website and started reading the instructions on how to fill out the form and saw that I need a name change document and thought the marriage certificate would suffice, but it says this: A name change document (e.g., marriage document) must identify you by both your old and new names. If it does not have enough identifying information (See IDENTITY, Page 3) , we will request an identity document in your prior name and another in your new legal name in addition to the name change document. Uh...our marriage certificate only refers to me by my maiden name! How could it refer to me by my married name when I hadn't changed it yet?! I don't have anything in my new name because you have to change your social before you can change anything else! Did anyone else encounter this problem??? ******************************** Baby Desmond Jacob arrived on 6/28. So in love with my little man! |

No, just take your MC, current SS card, and driver's Lic. I don't think she even LOOKED at my ID which is kind fo scary. It was very quick and easy (not the line but whatever) and they gave me a temp letter to take to the DMV.

Yup. Just your marriage certificate, SS card and ID when you change your name through marriage.

You have to change your social when you get married? As in SSN? Am I reading that wrong?

Ours had my maiden name on it, but on the other side It said Mr. and Mrs. (married name) above our mailing address (to which the cert was sent). Double check. I don't think it really matters as long as your officiant signed and dated the certificate declaring you both married. Good Luck

Mine doesn't have my married name on it, and they were fine with my birth certificate and certified copy of marriage license. They hardly looked at either of them, she was more concerned about whether I wanted my middle name spelled out or as an initial. At the DMV, I used my current license and the marriage license. They didn't ask one question about my Social Security Card. I thought that was a little weird, but I wasn't complaining!

Robbie: Some states' marriage certificates list maiden and intended married name. I truly doubt they will hassle you at the SS office. They spend so much of their day dealing with people who are irate, I am sure they are glad to do something as simple as a name change! Lucky: You need a new SS card, but you keep your number. That SS card allows you to file your taxes under your new name, get a new passport, etc.

Oh! lol I am so dense. I literally know nothing about getting married. Sometimes I'll think of a question that I now is going to be SO STUPID that I'm too embarrassed to even ask it. I google it instead. lol

Date: 9/27/2007 12:55:45 AM OMG, don't feel stupid at all! I SO wish I'd known about PS when I got married...there were so many questions I had back then but I relied on pestering all my married friends constantly, lol! So much easier to come here and do a search instead, heck you don't even have to resort to googling! More than likely whatever questions you have were brought up here at some point!

They don't keep the original copies do they? So, I don't need to go and get a certifified one correct?

I'm not sure how it works in your state, but in PA the copy that you get on the day of the wedding isn't valid for name change purposes. I had to order a certified copy. ******************************** |

Yup! I wonder why PA doesn't send one in the mail...I had to write a letter requesting it and send in cash. 'm starting to think they're the only state that doesn't just automatically send you one.

I'm going through this process as well--actually, I'm keeping my maiden name as a second middle name and have to go through the whole court process of changing your name, so there are some other complicating factors--but I'm curious, Robbie, how many certified copies of your ML did you need for this process? I'm trying to figure out how many extra to order. For the court-ordered name change I don't have to have the original certified, I can just have a copy. Then can I use the same certified copy for both the SS office and the DMV? I'm assuming that since they don't keep them, I can just bring a copy to the SS office, then bring the same copy to the DMV immediately afteward? I know that I will need an original copy to change my passport. I'm hoping I'll be fine with 3 certified copies.

No one keeps them so I just used one. I guess it might be good to order a second just in case but not necessary. My bank had to see it too FYI. I changed my maiden name to my middle (dropped my middle) and didn't have to do a name change with the court system. Maybe it is different for you since you are keeping both?

Yeah, I think some states allow you to change all of your names on the marriage license application. I live in MA and only had the option of changing my last name. It's not uncommon for clerks at the SS office and DMV to allow two middle names be printed on the new SS card and license, but the change is just cosmetic and not legal. The lawyer I contacted told me that while I could go that route and have a "common law" name, many legal institutions do not recognize common law name changes. Keeping my maiden name as a middle name through the courts is not really difficult, it's just an extra step to the process. Thanks or the info about the ML, I might just order one extra copy in addition to the one I pick up next week. I'll be glad when all of this is done!

Oops, I forgot to mention that if I just wanted to drop my middle name and add my maiden as my middle, I still would have had to go through the courts. Oy!

I ordered 2 copies. I probably could've gotten away with just 1, but I think (haven't done it yet so I'm not sure) that I'm going to have to mail in a copy to change my passport and I'd like to have 1 copy on hand in case there's anything I forgot to change cause who knows how long it'll take to get it back from the passport people.
