It has good brilliance and nothing can be seen from the top, but from the short sides of the rectangle, at certain angles a cloud can bee seen that appears to be a black spec. Both my fiance and I are greatly concerned by this. I know from the bottom inclusions can be seen, but the ability to see it from the side worries me. It is quite clear if you look at the stone from a few inches away (like some nosy people might). Any thoughts? (It is GIA certified H SI1, Excellent Polish, Very Good Symmetry, 70.9% depth, 70% table) New to the Forum.

Seeing inclusions from the side doesn't mean your stone has been misgraded. It's not clear what your concern is. Is you concern that you possibly didn't get what you paid for, or it is that you don't want to see any inclusions? If you're concerned that the stone was misgraded (which may mean having overpaid for the stone), you could alleviate this by taking it for an independent appraisal. If you're concerned because seeing an inclusion bothers you, then you should find a stone whose inclusions aren't visible to you from the side regardless of its clarity label. _____________________ Note: Chainsaw Not Sold Separately.

Very few settings give a side view AND prompt people to look...most of the time people will be looking from the top. In and of itself, that inclusion probably wouldn't bother me. Of course, if it really bothers you, that's another matter. FWIW, if anyone other than my FI was looking at my ring from a few inches away, I would probably poke them in the eye. Very unnecessary.

In the 12 years that I wore it no one ever noticed it. I actually kind of liked the birthmark -- I always knew it was mine when picking it up from the jeweler!

My question has more to do with people being able to see the inclusion from the side after it is set. It is a lose stone at the moment. We saw the inclusion when it was in a faux ring/clamp setting. I think it is more of a mental thing, especially with her. I love your comment about poking people who get too close in the eye, gave me a good laugh. We looked at a G SI1 that was a 2.21 at a local jeweler that will cost almost $2,700 more. She seems to like the G better, I think mainly because of the inclusion. (Couldn't see any spots on the G, saw some feathering on facet edges on the bottom/side is all.) New to the Forum.

It depends on whether you will be able to see it when set as a square means you are limited with rotating the diamond to hide it. Many do look on little birthmarks such as these a handy way of being able to identify their diamond, if this isn't you, then maybe a different stone of a higher clarity might be a more comfortable choice for you both? Once and depending on, how it is set, you may not be able to visualize this inclusion quite as readily. I own a radiant and it is currently set with side stones--thus limiting side viewing surface area--and even the sides that are "open" are protected with the setting further diminishing segments of the stone. If your stone is a keeper, why do you not and ask the designer/setter to make sure the basket holding the stone, where possible, covers the natural "blemish" you are concerned about. If this is neither good nor sufficient, perhaps you might have to exchange stones for one that is more "eye clean". Bigdiamonds suggestion about the "poking" make me laugh P.S. FireGoddess Ideal Rock Total Posts: 12,145 Last Post: 3/23/2009 Member Since: 1/25/2005	I'd ask a jeweler or appraiser whether the inclusion can be hidden by a prong or type of setting that you choose. If not, you and your FI need to decide whether it bothers you or not.
