Upgrading Wife's Wedding Ring for 1 Year Anniversary

DON HULIO Rough Rock Total Posts: 24 Last Post: 9/12/2007 Member Since: 4/23/2005	Just curious to know if anyone thinks that I may be being overcharged. I'm upgrading my wife's wedding ring for our one year anniversary. The center stone is a one carat princess cut, D color, VS2 clarity, with two .25 carat princess cut F color, I1 clarity, E color, SI2 clarity on each side. The side stones are channel set, or flush mounted into the ring. When we initially did this, the ring was custom, so naturally to add more stones is also a custom job. Anyway, long story short, I'm adding an extra .25 carat on each side, both are E-F color, SI2 clarity. Each stone will be channel set exactly the same as the other two .25 carat stones. Now looking at Price Scope prices, these types of stones range anywhere from $350.00 to $450.00 each. The jeweler quoted me a price of $1400 to do the job. That price is for the stones and for labor. Now let me say that I trust the jeweler, and I do not think that they would over charge, but that seems a bit high to me. Lets just say that on the high end, if the stones are excellent cut, $500 for each stone is reasonable to me...but that means about $400.00 for labor. So, I paid the $1400.00. I questioned that the price seemed a bit heavy for the stones and the labor and the jeweler assured me that the $1400.00 is the absolute most that it would cost. Also, the jeweler assured me that they would memo out two to three sets of stones so as to match the measurements as closely as possible to the stones that are already in the ring and that if the price came out to be less that the would refund the difference. This jeweler has over twenty years of experience, comes very highly recommended, and we bought my wedding ring from them as well. Sorry to be so long winded....but my main question really is "Knowing that the jeweler is one of, if not the best bench jewelers in my area, is $1400.00 asking too much for the job that I'm having done?" He wouldn't be able to just add more channel set stones or would he? Anyway it doesn't sound outrageous to me at all. Hopefully someone else more knowledgeable will chime in. a

The store has to make a profit, so it's not just a matter of pricing out the materials and estimating labour. It's a great thing to have a trusted jeweller, especially if they have an on-site bench person. I have a good relationship with my B&M, and it's a great asset to me. Would love to see pics of the ring before and after, by the way. We love pics here.
