buyza54 Rough Rock Total Posts: 7 Last Post: 9/12/2007 Member Since: 9/9/2007	I found two rings I like from small local shops and wanted to know what you guys think. 1.25 total carat weight. center diamond is .25 and then there are a carats worth of blue sapphires on the sides. Diamond Clarity is VS1 and Color is F. In a 14k gold setting. Other is a center stone of .45 carats (diamond) and then one sapphire on each side giving the ring a total carat weight of 1.15; the diamond clarity on this one is VS1 and the color is G. Also 14k gold setting. Each ring is roughly 2100. Curious if that is a good deal or if I can do better else where. I know internet is cheaper, but how much cheaper on what I am looking at? I kind of wanted B&M for viewing purposes, but since im kind of poor $$$ matters :) I looked a little on price scope but am unsure how to factor in the setting and the sapphires (no idea if sapphires are expensive or not). Thanks on behalf of me and my soon to be excited girlfriend :)

First I want to ask if she has expressed a specific desire to have sapphires in her engagement ring? As far as the stones go, you really don't add in the colored stone weight with the diamond weight. If those center diamonds are not certified, then it is hard to know whether the color and clarity are even accurate. Most often, they are probably optimistically graded. Most of the time with a budget of $2000, we'd recommend spending almost all of it on the best diamond you can find, and then set it in a $200 tiffany style setting. However, if she has said she'd rather have a setting with sapphires and a smaller diamond, then you should get her that. But it would be impossible for us to have any idea of the real value of those rings since we wouldn't know diamond or sapphire quality. A stone like this would be what I'd suggest. Then later on for an anniversary or something, she could always get a new setting with other stone if she wanted. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/2546/ ~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~

And setting is white gold if it helps. I really think they look nice. Assuming they are accurate, or at least somewhat accurate (the ratings on diamonds and such), is the price a general good range? Is the tiffany setting gold?

They are not necessarily accurate. But small stones under a half carat aren't always certified anyway. When you get a larger diamond, the GIA or AGS lab report is assurance that a neutral party has graded the stone and you can be pretty certain of its specs. In this case, if she wants a diamond and sapphire ring and you are looking at ready-made rings, it is very unlikely to find any with certified diamonds. So you'll probably just have to compare prices and quality as you look at this type of ring. You could also get an independent appraisal if there is an independent appraiser nearby. Yes, I was meaning a plain white gold setting at $200. A three stone setting would probably run more than that. I'll take a quick look and see if I see anything like this online. ~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~

I just bought two AGS ideal cut diamonds for earrings that are .308 carats each, and they were $357 each. Therefore, if one of the rings you like has a .25 carat center, that means you're paying about $1800 for a white gold 3 stone setting and side sapphires. That seems ridiculously overpriced to me. I would really recommend that you stick around Pricescope for a little while and learn more about diamonds, settings, etc. As far as internet shopping goes, I promise you that you have nothing to fear about shopping online if you use one of the Pricescope recommended vendors! A few of the most popular vendors are Whiteflash.com, GoodOldGold.com, EngagementRingsDirect.com and JamesAllen.com. Check out their websites, do a search for those vendors here on Pricescope, see what pops up and go from there.
