When I was in Waikiki, I saw all sorts of things, from chair and table umbrellas to a whole lotta people in thong bathing suits who SHOULD NOT, I repeat, SHOULD NOT, have been wearing them anywhere in public, so I think that at least half the people there will be blind from that experience and won't even notice your makeshift cabana. Seriously, though, I think if you keep a bit towards the back of the beach and not block too much of anyone's view, you should be fine. Harleigh ********** I never worry about diets. I didn't really see umbrellas and chairs either... hardly ever a towel, even. We are one with nature in Hawaii! If you used one of those there they might say you are "da kine"

Waikiki can be crowded in places, so you might have a hard time spreading out. Maui less so. Like Harleigh said, if you stay towards the back of the beach you'll be fine. One thing though, that tent will scream out Tourist, so be careful with your valuables (leave em at the hotel).

My friend uses a tent just like that for her 2 year old to nap in or play in when they're at the beach. I like them personally because they provide shade from the hot sun and they provide a spot to put things that you don't want to get sand all over. I agree with Harleigh though, maybe put it towards the back of the beach so you won't block the view of others. The only other downside is that tents like that seem a bit bulky and hard to carry.

However, since we were only there for a week I tried to stay far away from the shade!!
