i haven't been able to get a straight answer... so i thought i better post my conundrum to the experts. i have 2 1/2 eternity bands in platinum (our version of an E ring;) - my FI is ordering my wedding band tonight... we found a 1/2 eternity yellow diamond band in platinum - to match the metal of my E ring... however, i am worried that the tiny teeny yellow diamonds in plat aren't going to look "yellow" - since they are so small i'm afraid the plat will wash them out.... SO, i found a full eternity band of yellow diamonds in yellow gold (same price)... i think the contrast would be killer... but am nervous about wearing yellow gold next to platinum..... please help.... thanks!!!! |

No, you shouldn't wear them side by side. But I don't really know how long it would take to cause damage.

awww crap..... i was afraid of that... i tend to research until i find the answer that i like then i stop ;) but i wouldn't want to ruin the beautiful rings i already have... boo... platinum it is.....

i would suggest that you ask signed pieces to do you a platinum full eternity style in yellow sapphires. you could use the maternity rings for the mounting and ask to substitute yellow for the blue sapphire.

I have a suspicion that it is not as big a deal as many people on here make it out to be. After all, it isn't like one is a metal and the other is a bar of soap. they are both quite strong, thus it is probably more a matter of small minute scratching that will make the metal look...well, scratched up and dull. I would recommend calling jewlers mutual and seeing if they will still insure it if you have the two together. if they will still insure it 1) then I doubt there is a major problem, because if there were a major risk they would probably take action on it--as they would have a particularly vested interest in knowing and charging for it. 2) you would have it insured, so just get it and take your chances:) ____________________________ |

I thought it was ok to stack PLT with YG but not PLT with WG (it will wear down faster). Maybe one of the jewelers will chime in. Pretty band!

what do you mean wear and tear? I mean, if there were a true durability issue such as the ring breaking or a diamond falling out, that would be covered even if caused by wear and tear right? (I don't know anything about diamond ring insurance yet, unfortunately) but as far as scratching and being dull is concerned...well, I imagine that would be the task of the owner to upkeep and maintain, and it would no doubt take more regular maintenance. ____________________________ |

I am interested in hearing what they have to say! I really like either the wedding band in the attached photo or wf's scattered diamond platinum wedding band..my er is platinum.

Hey all, Here's an answer that came up in a thread a while back. The thread is here: http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=54477 But make sure you read Garry's post, which explains a lot about the WG/platinum issue (part of it is quoted below). The platinum will wear away any type of gold worn beside it (but palladium lower carat white golds will last longest and maybe pure palladium will do better too - but I have no experiance in that (I have 32 years experiance as a jeweller at the bench for about 12 years- and an employer of 6 full time jewellers)). The reason platinum does not wear away is that it smears (as explained) and that it seems to pick up particles of dust which make it become an abrasive. Silver has that property too to some extent and wears away gold - so silver beside platinum might even be a close to = wear - but silver is not good for diamond settings as it tarnishes under the stones. humph.. now i'm stumped.... i really wanted yellow diamonds...but only if they were in a yellow setting to set off the color... last night we were thhhhiiiissss close to ordering the sapphire shared prong from S.P. - we really like the clean lines of a solid color... and i like a solid color to break up the 2 diamond bands. for reference my two current rings are 3.2 mm each - the S.P. sapphire band is approx. 2mm and the yellow diamond band is 1.7mm. i know this may sound silly... but another reason i wanted the yellow diamonds was for the sparkle factor... i admit it.. i like bling! i'm afraid the sapphires won't sparkle.... any more thoughts? this is my current ring(s) (i have 2 of them)

I definitely think yellow diamonds would look better than yellow sapphires. My concern would be doing something custom without trying on the band first. Some of the SP eternity rings are set rather high and scratch the prongs of the e-ring which is unacceptable to me. Bands by Memoire and Tiffany are set low and do not scratch the e-ring. All I can tell you is that my mother has worn a white gold anniversary ring for at least 20 years next to her platinum rings and it looks fine. It never even occurred to me to look and see if they were the same metals until I came on PS. So maybe over 50 or 100 years you might have a wear problem. I'm just not seeing any damage after 20 or so. But I will say that I think it might be safest to have a platinum and diamond wedding band and just get the extra gold band for occasional wear. Be very careful about trying on anything you are considering having custom made with yellow diamonds, though.

thanks for the info about your mom.... i was considering getting a plain plat. band as well.. for a couple of reasons... #1 so i could have it engraved with our wedding date #2 in case i don't want to wear any bling.... and more for sentimental reasons... my only concern with another white diamond band is that it's just going to look like a blob of diamonds without any definition between the wedding band and e-ring... for reference this is the original eternity band i was going to order.. in platinum and yellow diamonds - what are your thoughts about the yellow diamonds being washed out by the platinum.. maybe i should just stick with that...

My opinion is that most yellow diamonds are light yellow, and for that reason they are set in yellow gold to try and enhance the yellow color. If you go with yellow diamonds in platinum, I would think they would have to be Canary yellow and definitely not fancy light yellow. But I know very little about yellow diamonds. I just know in rounds the color has to be pretty saturated to appear yellow. See DiaGem's current post on yellow diamonds. In rereading your original post, I now realize that you already have the two platinum/diamond bands as your e-rings. So I see why you want a contrast for the center. I think you should try to get the exact same setting for the center regardless of the color of the stones or the metal. Can you order from whoever you got the original bands from? That way you'll know the settings are the same height.

Hey gary, did you find out anymore about how platinum and palladium wear when worn together--as in say a platinum half eternity band with a palladium Ering (though my prongs are platinum so I am not too worried as long as the diamonds don't come in contact with the prongs) (Also, in a little thread jack my apologies, I will be getting a silver ring for her to wear in front of her Ering for a while, until I can get it resized, so any words on how Silver will wear on palladium? I think I will call up knox and ask exactly how they make the rings and try to determine exactly what kind of hardness it is in Victors, though I probably said that incorrectly:) ) ____________________________ |
