Hi,

After reading PS and GOG/WF info site, it seems to me that AGS IDEAL (000) has an edge over GIA's Excellent. So I feel more confident in a diamond with a AGS0 cert vs a GIA's Excellent cert.

On GOG, seems like more diamonds use GIA cert than AGS, however , for GIA graded diamonds, they do have an "estimated AGS" cut grade for that diamond too.

Does anyone know how accurate is that "AGS estimate" is on GOG site ? Or do they just directly translate GIA's excellent as AGS's Ideal(000)?

Thanks a lot.

only AGS can assign an official grade but they do make the software to get the light performance grade available using the data from a sarin or helium scan.
This is the same way they assign the grade at the lab.
GOG uses that software to get the estimated grade.
If sent too AGS the estimated grade is the grade it would get in the light performance testing AGS uses on their report.

Storm you know this is only part of the picture. This is not a new discussion.

AGS make all sorts of other distinctions, such as a stricter standard for symmetry and polish.
I do not believe that anyone, even if GOG did have gemological trained staff, could make that distinction on behalf of another lab with its own rules and regulations.

For example AGS has a general reputation for stricter overall grading.

Like I said its the light performance grade and is used as allowed by AGS for the vendors who licenced the software.

If you really want to go there where is the proof that AGS polish/sym ideal/ideal is stricter than GIA ex/ex? I haven't seen it.
Independent confirmation only from a third party with no $$ interest in the outcome.

blah just did my own research...
http://grading.pricescope.com/appendix-i.aspx
http://grading.pricescope.com/appendix-iv.aspx

In every case a GIA EX/EX was a AGS id/id when the AGS report was used that gives it.
12 AGS is sticter
15 gia is way stricter. <-- was someone sleeping?
17 gia is stricter.

Not enough samples to prove it but sure is interesting :}

Hello,

I don't usually get in on these but lets take a closer look at the dates on those five certificates that are AGS Ideal and GIA EX.

All of the GIA certs have a date of 29 Apr 04.  All of the AGS cert were dated sometime prior to that meaning AGS graded them first.  Of couse if you sent an AGS Ideal to GIA it is going to come back with an EX EX.

Lets try doing that the other way around and see what happens.  Send five GIA diamonds with GIA EX EX to AGS and see if all five come back Ideal.  My bet is that they will not.

Getting an AGS Ideal has a lot more to do with a serious microscopic examination of each and every facet that GIA does not go into.

There is nothing wrong with a GIA EX EX.  I am sure it is going to be a beauty but lets not confuse which lab is the Master when it comes to cut grade.

Hi Bob,
While I respect your opinion it falls short of being unbiased proof.
I would like too see the study done the results should be interesting.
The common refrain before the survey was done was that egl-usa was much worse than it turned out too be so it wouldnt be the first time something everyone thought was turned on its head or not.
