I am a bit frantic. We have recently purchased 3 round brilliant diamonds (they are already set in a setting) at a local jeweler with very good stats - according to GIA report. However, the stones were from 2004 - before GIA would list the cut on the certificate - and I have come to the sad realization that I don't know one of the most important 4C's - THE CUT OF MY STONES (symmetry and polish are 'very good' but that's different from the cut)!!! Can I have someone locally take a look at it to determine the cut or do I need to consult GIA specifically for additional info? Please help. I am in Chicago. And independant appraiser will be able to tell you that.

Thanks for replying. I just so want to wear the ring already... without the hassles. But I guess I'll need to do this to find some peace. ;) I hope an independent appraiser won't have to take it out of the setting... Worse off, I hope the cut is excellent. Oh, the slow ticking of the clock starts now...

They can do it in the setting, but depending on that, they may not be able to tell exactly how good they are, but they should definitely be able to give you a good idea. Do you like them, do they sparkle a lot? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Well, we did choose the setting and diamonds together but he hasn't let me see the final result yet. My boyfriend wants it to have a little bit of surprise factor, so he locked it in the safe to which I so desperately wish I had a key! Anyway, the diamond looked amazingly beautiful under the craftily dimmed lights of the store, very sparkly I remember - like a Swarowski crystal. It's a 2.01, E, VS2, very good polish and symmetry, nice proportions (except they don't list crown and pavillion angles). I am just so obsessed and nervous about it - I've always wanted my ering to be perfect and will battle hard for it, hehe. I hope I am easy on my bf though.

Well it sounds beautiful. And yes, just try and gently explain that with such a purchase, you want to be sure he got what he paid for.

Would you be able to return the ring if the cut was not to your approval? If it is already set and locked up in a safe and you can't return the ring, sometimes it is better not to open a can of worms... Do you know the GIA report #s?

I know what you mean... The depth and table #s are good, so I figure the rest of the stone must be nice. Plus, it's a 30K diamond from a prestigious dealer -- must be nicely cut. I dunno, perhaps cut is not that important. I love my setting and the known characteristics of the diamond from GIA report. I should be happy as it is. Thanks guys.
