We've been looking at engagement rings at local stores like Bailey, Banks & Biddle and Robbins Bros. Neither one of us knows much about anything when it comes to buying a diamond ring so we really do appreciate whatever advice or suggestions that come our way. The first ring we found that really caught her eye was the Ritani oval pave ring we found at BB&B The other ring she liked was the Scott Kay three-stone setting we found at Robbins Bros. I will try to attach pictures of both rings. Originally, she wanted to find something less traditional, more unique and the Ritani oval ring is what we ended up selecting as our top choice. But then she tried on the Scott Kay three-stone setting, and she really liked how it looked. In fact, the three-stone setting had always been her favorite but then we started looking at all the different kinds there are and now we've ended up with two very different choices. Ultimately, we want a nice looking ring with a quality diamond from a reliable jeweler for a reasonable price. After trying on rings at all the local jewelry stores, slowly educating ourselves on diamond shopping, and now perusing this forum, we are both feeling completely defeated and clueless about where to begin finding what we're looking for. There are just so many different options and things to consider that we don't know what direction to go at the moment. After reading through some of the postings here, I know that a lot of people recommend buying a loose diamond from an online vendor and then buying the setting separately. However, I do feel that there is an advantage to buying a ring from a local store like BB&B, such as the conveniency of bringing the ring in for free cleanings/checking the setting and their upgrading plan. Then again, I don't want to feel like I overpaid for less quality than I might get online. So here's what I'm looking for: .75 to 1.0 ct. round or oval, depending on the setting Very Good cut or higher H color or higher SI1 clarity or higher Platinum band preferred, but will consider white gold Budget: up to $5,000 for both diamond and setting AND matching wedding band We both really liked hearts & arrows after we read about them here, but we don't know if we'll be able to afford to get one based on our budget and what we're looking for. Since both the Ritani and Scott Kay settings go for over $2000, we're open to finding non-designer brands that are similar or having one custom made if it works within our budget. Since she seems to like both rings fairly equally, it's going to come down to the best deal we can get without having to compromise on quality. My questions for all of you: Which setting do you prefer? Where can we get the best price for the designer setting? Or where can we find a quality knock-off? If we were to buy the diamond and setting separately, how would that work? And where is the best place to go for the diamond and for the setting? Or would it be better to have one custom made? Would that work within my budget? Any recommendations for a custom jewerly maker? Thank you in advance for your help, advice and suggestions!

A round stone is going to be much easier to choose. I would recommend buying the diamond online because you will overpay in a typical jewelry store. And since you want to get the settings and stone for $5000 total, I think you need to get the diamond online, and I would also price the settings at Pearlman's since they carry both. My personal preference is for the Scott Kay set. I love it and think it will never go out of style. Do not worry about cleanings. Not that many people live in the same city where they buy the rings forever anyway. It's no big deal to have rings cleaned and checked at another jeweler. They are happy for you to come in and browse! I love 3 stone rings, and I almost got a Scott Kay myself but I eventually I saw this Verragio and I knew it was the one for me. It's very much like the Scott Kay. I'm so new to this, so I hope the picture comes through.

I agree with checking with Pearlmans and I'd have them price out a stone with the setting for you. Many times you can get a better deal if you buy both from the same place. pearlmans doesn't list all of their stones but only carry ideal cuts in all stones under 2 carats so you'd be sure to find a winner and could stay within your budget.. good luck!! ----------------------------- A deal is only a deal if you are getting exactly what you want.

I like the halo but in considering it for myself, I am leaning more towards without a halo. I could see myself getting tired of the halo, but the Scott Kay is pretty timeless. But both rings are lovely... the Ritani a bit more delicate, the Scott Kay a bit thicker. They are very different from each other, so she can try to pick which style she can see herself wanting to stare at day after day (at least that's how I am trying to narrow it down!). I've been to the maul and places like Ben Bridge, Robbins Brothers, etc. It's great to give me an idea of what styles and sizes I might like or not like... but when I'm ready to buy, I am DEF buying the diamond online. There are alternatives under $2,000... Knox oval halo with matching band Whiteflash 3-stone with surprise diamonds (it says the ring is available in different combinations, so maybe the side stones could be smaller than the center diamond like in the Scott Kay. At about $2,500 for both rings: Whiteflash round halo and matching band ETA: When I was looking at the bands on Whiteflash, I noticed the 3-stone setting does not include the price of the side diamonds- so that might put you out of your budget- especially when adding a wedding band as well (though Whiteflash does have some nice eternity bands for under $1000). I don't see how you are going to get designer rings and a stone for that amount. Aren't Scott Kay's at least $3000 just for the ER?? Depending on color and clarity, you're going to need approximately $3000 for the diamond. I would spend the majority of the budget on the stone and find a less expensive setting. Knox is a great suggestion for settings and Whiteflash also has some great rings should you decide to buy a stone from them.

That would be the only way. Yeah, the Knox in white gold is $1,090 for the e-ring and $790 for the w-band. With a knife edge or a ring with the appearance of two bands, they could forgo the band if that was something they were comfortable with or get a plain band and a band with diamonds could be an upgrade for later. Knox has a trellis 3-stone for under $1000... I wonder what the cost would be to have a surprise diamond added? Knox oval halo with matching band I was just about to suggest Knox for some nice Ritani look-alikes. With your budget, I'd stay away from big-name designers like Ritani, Verragio, Scott Kay, etc., and go with a less expensive version from Knox, Whiteflash, etc. You can always get it reset later when you have more money to work with. I also think it's a good idea to start with rounds rather than ovals, simply because it's just so much easier to pick a good stone. However, if you're set on an oval, here's a nice one at Good Old Gold: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/2859/ GOG tends to be a good place to go for non-round/princess cuts. That oval looks really nice to me and has a minimal bowtie. You're definitely looking at a cheaper non-designer setting with that stone and your budget, though. But I don't think you'll find a decent 1ct oval for much cheaper. I talked about it with my g/f and we have decided to go with a non-designer setting and spend mor on the diamond. The whole expreiance has opened my eyes to how hard and expensive it can be to find the perfect thing. The Knox rings look nice. I looked at his website, I like the fact that he has a ring that looks exaclty like the Ritani (except in round).
