Alright, the daughter of a coworker of mine with whom I am staying at the moment is engaged. They were looking at my diamond and I was checking out her rings. She..I know, don't even say anything...purchased her Ering and wedding band at Kay Jewelers in the mall.

When she brought out her wedding band-which she hasn't looked at much of course, she said "well look at that, it looks crooked. Alot of them look crooked" I looked at it and she was right, but then I thought they also look like ridiculously different sizes. I bust out my loupe and looked at the biggest "crooked" diamond location she had pointed out. Sure enough the metal bars on either side of the diamonds were crooked, the diamonds were crooked and I could see my finger on the other side of the ring through the gap. I looked at the others, some of them were sitting next to diamonds half there size and all of them were crooked or maybe just poorly cut? and there were numerous small gaps though out, with that one big one where even without the loupe you can see straight through it--now that we know what to look for anyway.

She took it back to Kay jewelers and they showed her others just like it and said "this is expected and intentional. It is called "Baguette Presentation."

WTF is this? I don't know how to approach her about it, if I should at all, but sounds like a bunch of BS to me. But then again, I have never looked into baguettes as my woman wanted a solitaire or a three stone (as far as I know and if she would have preferred baguettes she should have stepped up to the plate a little more). Any words from baguette owners? I would do some searches but the internet connection where I am at right now is really slow.

If this ring can still be returned, help the poor girl understand that there are better quality rings out there and she should return that one.

~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~
Ditto.  I have seen this at other mall stores, never heard the ridiculous term of baguette presentation.  What a crock.  I'm guessing they all look jumbled, and are mismatched.  Ughh.  But handle this with care.   Let us know how it goes.
Uhh, that is a HUGE load of crock.  I have baguettes on my ring and they are beautiful, amazing stones and straight, and match!  Somewhere floating around pricescope is a photo of my baguette ring.  Maybe someone with more technical skills can copy it here?  I posted it under show me the ring a while back.   Its not a wedding band, its an engagemetn ring but  the term baguette presentation??  They should call it what it is, baguette sloppiness.
Well I wish I had talked to her more about it last week...I doubt an opportunity will come up now as..well, she was a trucker and sortof fell asleep behind the wheel this weekend. Almost killed her fiance actually! The whole roof of the truck got ripped open and he was tossed from it...but somehow he survived. He got thrown out the open roof and knocked unconscious, then the truck rolled over him, but instead of squishing him he survived because the open roof rolled over him. Kind of like that scene in the original Jurassic Park. Anyway, pretty unbelievable actually, but the pictures are pretty nasty looking. They are both fine though, the fiance has a cut on his leg and they both have a bunch of bruises and more developing, but they were able to save 2 out of 3 of the pets that were with them. I don't know what will happen to her job though.
But even so, going back to last week after I looked at her rings with her she decided she wanted it fixed and was very upset at first, she also needed her Ering resized. So she went in today, even after all of that! and got told it was normal and to be expected. I know that she paid 2800 for her Ering of I1 Emerald Cut diamonds (at least 1 is DEF I1) with baquettes on the side, and my .61 ct round was about 2 times wider than her center stone. So I think def a massive overpayment.
So after she told me all about the crash she told me about the rings. I am positive that she will be terribly unhappy with the crooked diamonds and gaps for a very long time but she told me "I didn't pay for very high quality and perfection" (and given the situation I didn't ask the price at the time but based on her Ering price/quality and size I think she certainly did pay enough, she just didn't get it). Still, I really don't want her to be unhappy with it, so I am hoping over the next couple of weeks a time will come up, and I will be ready to find out if there is anything left to be done (Returning it) and have options and examples ready to suggest. I know a few good local BandM now too to help direct her to if she dismisses an online purchase, but examples and prices ready at hand would be great if anyone with more Baguette experience than me wants to chime in.
Thats the other thing. Her Ering has baguettes as well and they are similar but not nearly as bad. A pretty clear difference in craftsmanship between the two. I think if she does have options and she finds out, and finds out that she did in fact pay enough to get better quality and craftsmanship then she won't hesitate to take those opportunities. I get the feeling that the band purchase wasn't so long ago too, but I haven't found a great way to find out yet, since I was too stupid to do it last week when we discovered it. (also all metals are I think 14kwhite gold, just for price frame reference, def nothing more expensive than that.)
Why dont you just ask her, "hey, I was thinking, if you're not feeling sure about your rings, I'd be happy to help you get a better quality set for the money - we can look online or locally", and let her decide if she wants to try to return them or not. I think if she does return them, maybe you can offer to accompany her so someone with more education on the matter can stand up to the sales staff if need be. If I were her, I'd be thrilled to have someone help me out.
