In all my productiveness, I came across this amethyst . It obviously has a gianormous window, but it is big and the color looks pretty (and clean) -- could it be recut? How much would you pay for something like this? Would a recut even be worth it? Would it make a good paperweight?

No its not worth buying for recut amethyst rough is readily available to cutters and not expensive.
You would be much better off starting fresh than recutting.

I don't know much about recutting stones but I once asked a cutter I know about whether it is worth recutting a similar stone and he said that it depends upon the depth of a stone as to whether you should recut it or not. If it's not deep enough then the overall size would be reduced significantly and that along with the cost might be prohibitive since amethysts are not very expensive stones. He suggested checking into any local gem clubs where you might be able to find a good amateur cutter who would charge less and then it might be worth it. This stone looks pretty deep so you might be ok without losing too much size. I do like the color and even if it were to be reduced down to 9-10 carats would be still a VERY good size. I have a 10ct oval amethyst pendant which I love. Good luck!

The color on that amethyst doesn't impress me.  It's kind of washed out, and I don't see the red flashes I would normally see on a fine amethyst, but it's hard to tell from a picture.  I would say you could easily find a nicely cut amethyst in a nicer color.  Amethysts are usually stones that are cut better than others (unlike the stones cut in Souteast Asia like sapphires and rubies), so I would never spend the money on that stone.  If it were a native cut ruby or sapphire that had a huge window, and it was otherwise a gorgeous color, then I would consider a recut as long as too much carat weight wasn't sacraficed.

thanks for the input. i had a feeling that for an amethyst it might not be worthwhile, but i wanted to check with those in the know.

Here's a nice well cut one you might want to check out.  It's not as big, but it looks lovely.  With the re-cut fees, you'd end up saving money just buying a well cut one from the get go.   http://customgemstones.com/QUARTZ/am900.html
