I am with my gf for three years and I am looking for a promise ring for her birthday on Aug. I had trouble because of two things:

1. The ring size. She can fit in size 4 to 4.5.  Size 4.25 may be a perfect match. Lots of beautiful rings are out because of this...most vendors only provide size 5 and above.
2. Limited budget. We both are graduate students and I also need to pay her tuition and rent......which makes me can only afford rings under $200 at this time.

Here are several choices I did research on internet:

1. Heart diamond promise ring 1/20 ct. $187. I don't know the reputation of this website.
 http://www.abazias.com/database/NewEngagementInfo.asp?stock=ENG-P-12-8085

2. World Jewels 0.15 ct diamond ring, $160. Somebody said the quality is low?
http://www.worldjewels.net/_e/Solitaire_Rings/product/v-33/14k_Gold_Round_Diamond_Solitaire_Ring_15_Carat.htm

3. JustMetal Pinnacle [Diamond] Titanium Three-Stone Ring, 0.14 ct $179
http://www.justmetal.com/storefront/product_info.php?products_id=353

4. 14k White Gold Diamond Heart Ring (H/I1, 0.02 ct. tw.)
http://www.mondera.com/jewelry/product.aspx?mscssid=SXNMXMDQOISVHQPAOHFNEKLPVCUPCVZB&partno=3004006&nav=diam&deptid=2100&collection=&size=

5. Tiffany Elsa Peretti?stacking band ring. Tsavorite, carat total weight .02. Sterling silver $215
http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/item.aspx?sku=GRP00488&search_params=t+-s+2-p+3-l+-h+-c+-r+115+169-x

I personally like No. 3. But it seems girls are in favor of the word "tiffany". As I want to give her a surprise, I couldn't ask her about these choices. Please help me choose one. Many thanks,

Regards,

robustzgy

Welcome to PS!  That is really sweet you want to surprise your gf with a promise ring on her birthday.

My favorite is #3 as well!

I love the design of #3 too but the I2 clarity on the stone, even though it is a 10 pointer, would turn me away.  I guess out of all the options I might even choose the Tiff ring based on the quality of the melee in the other rings.  It would give her the 'blue box' experience without the tremendous price tag and I hate to say it, but the name does carry significant weight.    (option 2, the 15 pointer that is g/h si would be alright if it was cut decently enough to throw off some good sparkle)

I agree with FG, the I2 clarity of #3 would be a concern for me.  I know it's a small stone, but still.  I'd go with the Tiffany Tsavorite band.  It's lovely.  Just my 0.2

Thanks FireGoddess & Kaleigh.

But I heard that human eyes can't distinguish H-I clarity?

Also, will sterling silver become darker as time goes by? Thanks,

I vote for #3 as well.

How about this?  There is one in size 5.  Maybe for a different finger?  http://www.shopnbc.com/product/?familyid=J300048&storeid=1&page=LIST&category=Jewelry|t305&prop=Rings|176&prop=Diamond|318&catprop=318&sort=0&track=176&cm_re=SearchList-_-N-_-N

H-I  is the color.  And I can't tell the difference between an H and an I.  The clarity of the stone was what I was talking about.

Another vote for the tiffany!  There is nothing better than receiving a little blue box on your birthday (except for what is inside

Does she currently have any tiffany?  I bet it would knock her socks off if she doesn't!  And, the quality is top-notch, which would be the most important thing to me.

Good point.  I didn't notice the I2 clarity until after I posted.  The I2 clarity would turn me away too.

Could you afford to spend $50 more?  There's this one: Elsa Peretti® band ring. Sterling silver; diamond, .02 carats.  I would prefer this on over the Tsavorite one.

What Kaleigh said.

No seriously, it's hard to keep straight when you're first starting out but H/I color - yes, side by side it would be almost impossible for 2 laypeople to tell the 2 apart.  We were talking about the clarity, which was listed as I2.  There's only 1 grade below that, I3.  We're talking stones with inclusions visible to the naked eye.  When you're in the SI range, or slightly included, those can be found that are invisible to the naked eye, which is of course preferable.  I'd stay away from stones with an I2 clarity.  That's why I would veto option #3.

ETA:  Silver can tarnish over time, yes.  It would need to be polished every so often.  I'd even go as far as to ask whether Tiffany rhodium plates their silver.  Some places do this, to prevent the oxidation reaction that allows silver to tarnish.

I just can't handle any I clarity stones for promise rings and engagement rings.  I colour is all right though.  Of all the options, I like the Tiff idea; not too pricey, has the name and look and who can resist a splash of colour?

An even better choice!  I like the diamond one; it carries more importance since it's a promise ring.

i'd go with the diamond tiffany too. and if i couldn't afford the tiffany name, i'd probably commission this ring with a trusted jeweler. i think it's sweet & lovely.

I vote Tiff's, as well. Diamond or Tsavorite, I think you'll get better quality for your money and the additional "Blue Box" glee. Plus, the simplicity would make it easy for her to keep wearing on another finger once you're engaged without competing for attention with the e-ring. And it could double as a travel wedding band once you two are married so that if you go anywhere she's afraid to bring her ring, she'll have something you purchased with romantic/permanent intentions.

I want to chime in because I have two versions of the Tiffany ring in question - emerald and diamond. They're simple and beautiful, and after my boyfriend got me the first one (for our anniversary a year ago) he was able to add to the collection for Christmas. They're perfect stacked together, so one would be great to build upon later for future gift ideas. I vote for Tiffany's!

I like number 3, but the quality really bugs me.  If the quality of the center stone was better I would go for that one.

the tiffany ring is really pretty and I think more likely that she will really like it-every girl likes a tiffany piece of jewelry.

The others are a little too cutsy with hearts and all.  If your gf likes hearts then this is fine, but personally I can't stand hearts in my jewelry.

Since most of people vote for the Tiff, I think I would go for it. Either the diamond one or the Tsavorite one. But the price now goes up to $300(including tax and shipping).

Thank you all. You are so nice here. snlee, chron, FireGoddess, Kaleigh, jcrow, pricess,...........and many others, thank you, and have a good day.

Is there a Tiffany anywhere near you?  You'd at least save on the shipping...

Glad to help!

Besides, now I feel kinda indebted to you...without this post I wouldn't have discovered that Tiffany's ring and I wouldn't know that I'm buying myself the pink sapphire one for a graduation gift to myself!

As far as shipping charges go...find where the nearest Tiffany's is and if the cost of gas there and back is less than shipping, go pick it up!

I love the Tsavorite ring... is her favorite color green or was it a random choice? I like that it's different from typical promise rings... and I like the idea of getting a collection of them since they are stacking rings.

Ok, this is a little late but: It's a tie for me between#3 and the Tiffany's (and I usually avoid brand names). However, I have to agree that the I2 in the tension ring would scare me away, especially because you aren't supposed to set any diamond with a lower clarity than a VS2 in a tension setting. That diamond could crack and you would loose it! Soo...I vote Tiffanys!! It is really pretty!!

The Tiffany's rings are pretty, but I prefer the more dainty-looking ones (1 and 4) for a promise ring. Also, what was wrong with 2? Looks very nice to me, and actually, it's probably the one I would choose if I were the girl...

I also like #3's style, but not the I1...
The Tiffany ring would be my choice.  I like both the Tsavorite and the Diamond one.
Good luck!

I actually like that Tiffany's ring!  I need to get shopping for a small $250 or so ring for my middle daughter, and I think those are wonderful - and I've not been into Tiffany's stuff/name before.  What a great find!  They remind me a lot of the Etienne Perret starlight bands at http://www.starlightbands.com/.  You can see more of these at http://www.starlightbands.com/aboutStarlightBands.htm, plus read about Etienne and his wife, Connie.  I love the flexibility offered in designing/customizing these bands.

Now...I'm off to look more closely at that Tiffany's site!

I think you made an excellent choice with the Tiffany's ring. It is a ring she can wear even once she has an engagement ring. I think it is a nice choice, and it looks like it isn't trying to be a miniature engagement ring. It is beautiful!
