Hi Guys,
I have one question on appraising the stone, is it possible to appraise the diamond after getting it in a setting. If yes, why do some people recommend to buy diamond seperately? Is it worth it.
Thx in advance

It is possible, but won't be as accurate. Loose, diamond weight is determined by weighing the diamond. Once set, the diamond has to be measured to calculate carat weight. Also, measurements can be limited by the setting style, thereby affecting the carat weight calculation. Inaccurate measurements can also adversely affect, or boost the cut rating. Sometimes inclusions are concealed by the setting that would otherwise be seen in a loose diamond.

Maybe some of the experts will comment on color rating and other evaluations (Sarin, Brilliance Scope, Flourescenc, etc.) that may or may not be run with a diamond set.

Why use a big word when a diminutive word would be succinct!

Reason for having stones loose...

Mountings can hide cracks under the prongs.

Mountings can also influence the color grade.

Can't do Sarin reports if the stone is set.

Can't do brilliance Scope reports if the stone is set.

Best thing is to send the ring and the stone to the appraiser.... then let the appraiser get it set for you when the testing is done.

If the stone is currently set, it shouldn't be a problem removing it, and then put back in.

The more information and test that you get, makes your purchasing decision a lot more informative, and when "risking" your money, its prudent to get ALL the information.

Great information. So you mean that the appraiser can get the ring set in setting, or could somebody else set the stone in setting like local jeweller or I don't know whats the safest way to do it. Is there any warranty provided if theree is damage to the stone while setting the stone in the ring?
Any scoop on that, what are the public experiences here by people who bought the stone seperately, please post your opinion,
Thx
