Hi! I've been lurking around for a while but finally signed up so I can post/ask questions.

My mother recently gave me this beautiful antique diamond ring. Her father gave it to her. He frequents auctions and estate sales and picked it up for next to nothing. He has no use for it so she got it. She's getting nostalgic (*sigh*) and wants me to have it now and not when she's dead (gotta love moms!). I LOVE the ring and wear it despite it being too big size-wise for my hand. I must get it sized ASAP.

I don't know anything about this ring other than a jeweler told them it was pretty old and reasonably valuable (he estimated $3500). He said the value came with the diamond being original to the setting. Said that if the two were apart they'd be essentially worthless.

From my Googling I can assume it's an Edwardian-style but that's all I can tell. There is an "S" on the inside of the band but any other markings have been lost b/c it's been sized several times and the band is uneven on the underside.

Some photos I took next to the window:

Very pretty.  Lucky you!

Now if you  take some close ups of the stone some of the old cut experts may be able to give you more info on it.  The facet style changed at various points in history.

ETA:  Sorry I didn't hit refresh before posting!  It does look like an old cut to me but I'm a novice.

Any suggestions/tips on taking a better shot of the stone?

Last one is a GREAT shot I can see the culet.  Hope some experts will post soon.  How high does the crown of the stone look to you?  It may be hard to see 'cause of the setting.

If I look through the side of the ring, like in the 3rd picture, the bottom of the stone (the point) comes about half way down to those small openings at the top.

I hope that makes sense. It's not the cleanest it could be, but it's not as filthy as it was either :) I'll clean it up and try to get a few better shots.
