I snapped a couple pictures of my mom's ring while we were on vacation last month. My dad sold his beloved motorcycle to get the money to buy her ring back in 1975 (he is now the proud owner of a Harley, 32 years later ).

Neither of them were sure of the specs other than that it's about 3/4ct. My dad seemed to think that the jeweler told him it was internally flawless, which may have happened, but to my eyes it looks like at best an SI2. I'm no expert, though. Any guesses?

Anyway, I always thought the setting was quite unique and beautiful!

Musey, your mother's ring is beautiful!  I'm not a big fan of marquise, but her stone in that setting is quite beautiful, definitely has that 70's feel, kind of whimsical and free flowing, ya know?  It's hard to tell from the pics what the clarity could be, but I'd venture to say it might not really have been IF...maybe SI?  I can't tell if there are inclusions/clouds or it's just the pics.  Anyway, thanks for sharing!  It's such a sweet story that your dad sold his Harley to buy your mom an engagement ring!

My parents got married in 1969, and my dad proposed with a cigar band, lol!  Mom never has had a diamond, but she says she doesn't like them anyway "because you can't tell if they're real."  I think maybe I was adopted, LOL!  However, she has this wonderful solid 18k YG wedding band that is soooo wide, very reminiscent of a cigar band, hee hee, I love it.  Unfortunately I can never try it on because her finger is about a size smaller than mine and it would just get stuck...but it's gorgeous and very fitting of her style.

That's such a sweet story musey!!  No clue as to what the clarity might be, it's a lovely ring.  One that I'm sure your mom treasures to this day.

Your ring is just gorgeous, love it!!!

IT is hard to tell from just a picture, but I would guess that it is not IF.  It IS lovely, though!

I definitely agree, it's not just the picture. I'm sure the jeweler told them it was, it was likely easier to get away with that back in pre-internet days, especially with non-diamond folk like my parents. I've encouraged them to get it appraised (not sure it ever has been), but I don't think they care enough about jewelry to actually do it!

Beautiful rings!  Your mom's marquise is very pretty, and I really like the unique setting, too.  Coincidentally, my mom got engaged in the 70's also and I was looking at her original ering the other day in which the jeweler told her he set a "perfect stone".  Though it isn't noticeable to the naked eye, when we looked at it under the loupe there was an obvious black inclusion.  She wasn't too upset (it's a small diamond and she likes the setting more than the stone), but it sure makes me very thankful for the wealth of consumer info we have today.

Interesting setting very neat.  It is so true that diamond buying has changed.  And I think we care more about the stats than the folks in the 60's and 70's did.  Or maybe that's just 'cause we're PSers!

Ahhh.  Thanks for the memories.  I was married in 1976, and I remember how popular those wedding sets were.  3/4 carat was a substantial size.  How nice of your dad to sell the Harley.  I remember seeing the ads for that set, but in the end I decided I didn't want to solder my rings together, and went with a set where the wband could be worn separately.

Sounds like your mom is a lucky lady.  Thanks for sharing!

Are you the only daughter? Will it make its way down to you eventually? I like how Monarch put it- free flowing and whimsical. I am oh not a girlie girl but it looks lovely on your finger. Though yours is the one I am more drawn to - just love those asschers!
ps thanks for posting my set I am too computer illiterate I usually have to ask my 14 yr old to do it for me.

I am!! I had never even thought of that. There isn't a single piece of "heirloom" jewelry floating around in my family, but I've recently begun to think that I really should start that tradition.

I'm always a little hesitant to post others' rings after reading some of the old "please don't re-post my ring" threads, so I'm glad you didn't mind my posting your set!

FlyGirl and diamondseeker... I had no idea it was a popular design back then!! I've never seen one like it elsewhere. Do you remember anything about the designer/etc.?

Orange Blossom comes to mind as a big advertiser back then of these types of rings.  I did a little research and it appears that Orange Blossom was sold to Josten's and the molds were destroyed.  But, the molds from the Canadian arm of the company have survived, and some of the rings that are available now can be seen here.   www.orangeblossom.ca

I can see some resemblance to your mother's rings in some of these.  The marquise cuts and the swoops.
