Hi Everyone! I am new here. My Fiance are getting married in October and just picked out our wedding bands. My engagement ring has a very low setting on it. Its a .5 carat princess cut ring set in platinum. We were having issues getting a band that woudl look right with such a low setting and decided to get it reset. The jewler is charging us $800 to re-set it in a new platinum setting. Is this to much?

Is the new setting just a solitaire setting? If so how big or how wide? I just looked at a classic plat. solitaire setting from JA and it was $500. So, I would think the price of $800 is a little high by PS standards. Good Luck MWG

Depending on the style of the setting $800 might be reasonable. However, if it is a plain stock tiffany style mounting, it's a couple of hundred high. You will have a hard time getting much for your old setting, but I'd contact bill pearlman at pearlmans as he often consigns platinum settings. If he won't take it you can always try ebay or the sales on diamondtalk, but I wouldn't expect much more than $150.

Another suggestion, if for some reason you cannot sell it or choose not to sell it, you could keep it as a right hand ring or another e-ring and put a cz in it. This might be great if your fiancee is really active. Just a thought. MWG
