 Micro-pave on double prongs?

Hi everyone,

As you know, I'm on a crusade to design an engagement ring for my girlfriend. Does anyone have any knowledge/opinions/advice with regard to the possibility of putting micro-pave on double prongs?

Leon Mege advised me that he didn't like doing it and preferred to do pave on double prongs only when the band is bright cut pave, not micropave. According to him, it is difficult to resolve the shape of rounded-edge double prong with micro-pave. However, he said he'd do it if that's what I wanted. I see that he's done it on at least one other ring: the 'Gina',  http://www.artofplatinum.com/4images/details.php?image_id=52.

I'm not interested in the other features of the ring, only the treatment of the prongs.

Does that look odd to any of you?

As a general matter, I am trying to figure out how to do double prongs with a three-sided micro-pave band. I'm not considering non-paved prongs. So, if the double prongs don't work out, I'll just switch to single claw prongs with micro-pave instead.

Anyway, I'm happy to get your input.

If Leon says no, I would tend to trust him.

As well, just so you know, he WILL refuse to do things if he doesn't think it will work. Including whole projects. So I personally would listen to him...he's the expert. But that's just me!

I tend to agree, but did you see the 'Gina' I linked to above? How do those prongs look to you?

I personally LOVE Leon's double prongs. And I think that pave would overpower them personally. But I am also a "clean lines" person, so I really don't love the pave encrusted everywhere rings. Too much for my taste.

ETA: I don't know what you mean about that ring having pave prongs. It doesn't seem to...

Maybe that's where the confusion came from? Because Leon thought you wanted pave all OVER the prongs?

I too tend to agree with Leon, i prefer when those '"ends" are not appearring from nowhere but are extentions of the define lines from the bottom of the basket up. Cleaner lines if you will, jmho though. Gina is beautiful too.

Right, but the Gina prongs are done with micro-pave. Ostensibly, that's how the double prongs would look if I did it this way.

Hmm, maybe you're right about the possible miscommunication.

At any rate, what do you think of the Gina prongs?

Don't kill me, but I prefer them without the pave. Any particular reason you're dead set for the pave prongs?

I would trust leon's opinion 100%.  In addition, my personal opinion is that pave on double prongs tends to look a bit crusty.

I like pave on the shank and on the horizontal basket bar, but prefer the look of plain polished metal on the prongs.

Hmm, mostly because I like consistency and it would bother me if nearly the whole ring is pave, but not the prongs. That kind of thing irks my girlfriend, too. For example, she hates argyle sweaters that are only argyle on the front pane.

Have you ASKED her? Because there is a BIG difference for me with your comparison example and prongs with pave. Personally, I think the pave on the prongs actually breaks things up and interrupts the flow much more than non-paved prongs.

But again, just me.

I think pave on the prongs can be overkill. I wouldn't want to take away from the center stone. I'd trust Leon's judgment because he sees how they turn out.

HI:

Not that my input will be helpful, but two of the most beautiful rings I've ever seen (in pictures), both had micropave on the prongs:  one ring was created by Taffin (rounded prongs, shown in March Vogue, 2004; large sapphire ER), the other is a VCA (triangled ends, from archives; recently reprinted in Robb Report June 2006, diamond ER).  Gosh, if I only had a scanner.....

cheers--Sharon

How can you tell from that picture that the prongs are micro pave and not pave?  Am I the only one who can't tell???

Here's what might be a clearer picture of Pokey's ring...with pave prongs....

Now, those are the kinds of prongs I'd like to do. Is that ring three-sided micro-pave on a rounded band? Or is the band squared at the edges? I'f thats rounded, then that's close to what I want.

From my understanding, the difference between micro-pave and pave is merely relative size of the pave stones.

fanboy it seems obvious that both you and your FI want pave on the prongs. Use pokey's ring to help explain what you want.

Right, well I know that I want to do pave on the prongs. I was just curious about its application to double prongs: will it look right, how and where do the claws separate, etc.

My guess is that they are not rounded.  Do a search for Pokey's Leon Mege tsavorite thread...maybe there are better pictures...

I think there's more to it than that.  Here's Leon's article describing the difference? :   http://www.artofplatinum.com/articles/micropave.php
