Hey all,
A friend of mine purchased a princess cut diamond E-ring on ebay from a reputable dealer. There were some visible inclusions, but nothing major. He said that a couple weeks ago, his Fiance asked him if he could see a cloud in the corner near one of the prongs, but he couldn't see it. Now, he says that the cloud is more pronounced and visible. It seems as if the cloud wasn't there to begin with, but formed and is getting larger. Is this possible? What could cause a cloud to form in a cut diamond?

Thanks for the help!!

-David

Is he absolutely sure it's a diamond?

And has it been cleaned really well?

A visit to an independant appraisor may be in order....

"It is also important for the State to inculcate in its subjects an aversion to any 'conspiracy theory of history' for a search for 'conspiracies' means a search for motives and an attribution of responsibility for historical misdeeds."

-Murray N. Rothbard, in The Anatomy of the State

John Swinton [1829-1901] Chief Editorial Writer of the New York Times (Considered "the Dean of his Profession" by his peers), when asked to toast an 'Independent Press' in a gathering at the National Press Club, circa 1880

"There is no such thing in America as an independent press unless it is in the country towns. You know it, and I know it. There is not one of you who dare express an honest opinion. If you express it you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid... for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for doing similar things....

The business of the New York journalist is to distort the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and sell his country and race for his daily bread, or for what is about the same thing, his salary. You know this, and I know it and what foolery to be toasting an 'independent press.' We are tools, and the vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are jumping-jacks. They pull the strings and we dance. Our time, our talents, our lives, our possibilities, all are the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes."

Thank you...yeah, I have already told him that he needs to get to an appraiser ASAP. We'll see what they say.

Thanks,
David

An inclusion won't all of a sudden appear in a diamond, however damage can sometimes have some visible effects around it, but it doesn't sound like this is the case here.  Very often people have and wear a diamond for a while, then suddenly the light is just right and the angle - an inclusion pops up which they may not have noticed previously.  This is a more likely explanation in my opinion, or if it is a clarity enhanced diamond, there is a small possibility that the filling has become unstable due to a jewellers torch, or some cleaners with ammonia in aren't recommended for these stones if this was used.  I think too the independant appraiser is a good idea.

I think they should clean the ring.  However, for many many other reasons, they need to have it appraised and they should insure it too!
