I've seen a few very minor stones (yellow quartz) with concave cuts look absolutely spectacular. Only a few cuts, yet you'd think there were hundreds! Question: Is it possible to take a stone (ex.tourmaline) which is cut too shallow (large window), and recut it with concave cuts underneath to get rid of the window?? Thanks Ger

Any stone with a window can be recut/shaped to close the window, be it traditional faceting or concave faceting. The thing to consider is the angles of the cut which determines how much weight will be lost and whether it will be worth a recut. Only a cutter with the stone in hand can make that determination. But in short, yes, it can be done. Whether cost effective or not is another matter.

I think I had the same exact question, and I found a cutter, John Bailey, on the internet, that said he could do the concave cutting for very little $$ (less than $200). He would only do the concave faceting for that, no other cutting. I don't know much about his work, but he has some examples of concave cutting on a paraiba tourmaline on his website. He said the gem has to have a substantial bottom to it, so maybe yours is a candidate. http://www.gemstoneartist.com/ |
