I'm building a three-stone ring. The center stone is a 1.23ct. H&A measuring 6.89x6.94. What size side stones do y'all recommend? I was sort of tossing around the idea of .30 each, but am wondering if that's too big. I want the ring to look 3-stone-y (is that a word?!), but I'd love if the center stone really popped, size-wise.

thanks!!

I think .25 to .3 would be a great size!!  It would be a lovely and classic combination and I think it would still emphasize the center stone.

Ditto.

Hi kcoursolle and Ellen!

Thanks for the replies--and the confirmation. :) Sounds like I'm on the right track, size-wise.

I've noticed that few vendors list stones below .30ct. Is that because those stones aren't typically lab-graded? Anyone know?

Certs aren't usually worth it for such small stones. Usually, whoever is making the ring will find them for you. Whiteflash is particularly helpful as a vendor for finding sidestones and taking pictures.

I have a 1.23 solitaire and .35 earrings.  I put them together to imagine what a 3 stone ring would look like.  I agree that a .25 to .30 would look great!  It would definitely emphasize the center stone.  Good luck!  Can't wait to see the final product!

I like the .25-.3 side stones as well. That will really make your center stone pop! I hope you post pics of the finished product!

I agree about the .25 sidestones. I love it when they are much smaller than the center stone. Good luck!

Hi everyone!

Thanks so much for the replies.

Neatfreak, that makes sense about why I'm not seeing lab reports with the smaller stones. I wonder of smaller stones with certs exist??

snlee, sounds like your ring/earring mockup is what I'm envisioning! Glad to hear that it looks divine . :)

Kcoursolle and Fire Goddess, thanks for the link! Too funny that another PSer is mulling over the same issue. :) The proportion chart that diamondseeker2006 provided was very helpful!

Sparkles, Thing2of2 and Tacori, thanks for the vote! Sounds like everyone is liking that .25-.30ish range. I had a vendor recommend .40 or .50ct. for each stone, but I think that might be a bit big for me. I like the side stones smaller without being toooooooooooo small, if that makes sense.

I'm reminded of Belle's lovely ring that WF made for her. I think it was 1.25 center with .30 side stones. Does that sound right? I'll try to find it...

Okay, I was wrong. Belle's side stones are .25 aca's. And I love, love, looooooove that ring!

I'm doing a custom setting with fishtail/triple bead prongs a la Selkie's beautiful Victory ring:
http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=46111

I just looked back at her thread and she has .25-ers, too!

I guess the size difference between .25 and .30 would be too great, right? I mean...I'm thinking either would be fine? I can feel myself starting to obsess now. ;)

If you are looooving too rings with .25 stones, then that's what I would get.  It will be slightly cheaper too as an added bonus!

And I do loooooooove cheaper! :) Maybe I'll have them call in some .25-ers (they don't stock stones that small), take a look-see and see what they run.
