I am shopping for an engagement ring...really just the stone and will let her pick out her setting/mounting.  I have come across a local seller that is selling his ring due to a broken engagement and is willing to meet me at a local jeweler to verify.  It is listed as 1.15 E VS Princess cut and he is selling for $2000 which seems pretty low to me (based on this sites price search).  Couple questions:

Is that a real good price for that stone if it in fact is what he says it is?

Also, is going to a random jeweler in the area the best way to verify the stone?  I do not have a jeweler I use regularly so I would just pick one out of the yellow pages.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Good deal if it is really what it is. Any certs? Do you know anything about the most important C, CUT?

But NO going to a jeweler won't tell you anything.

Spend $100 and have him meet you at an independent appraiser (read: not someone who works at a jewelry store OR sells stones) before you buy it. The appraiser can assess the cut, clarity, any inclusions, color, etc. That's the ONLY way I would buy from a random person.

Questions: Is the stone certified and by whom? Some of the particulars like depth and table percentage and measurements would be helpful. It's possible that you're getting a great deal, and equally as possible that you're not. If you post the particulars from a certification and also who issued the certification you'll have no problem getting several good responses.

Good Luck, vsdiamondbrokers
