edit:  That thread is still going.  If you separate the cr*p and idel chitchat out, it's worth reading/following.  Several rumors and some gossiping seen there first have later proven true.

Thanks for posting. I thought we were in the clear on everything! Just found out that we fed our mini schnauzer 3 cans worth of a food that was suspected to have melamine in it by the FDA!

"... The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning that the FDA has confirmed the presence of melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, in rice protein concentrate used by the contract manufacturer in the production of some of these products. It should be noted the "BLUE" canned dog and cat food products were not formulated or labeled to contain rice protein concentrate, and that the manufacturer, American Nutrition, Inc. added the rice protein concentrate to these products without Blue Buffalo Company's knowledge or consent. For this reason, Blue Buffalo Company is concerned that it can not have any faith in the integrity, or the accuracy of the ingredient labels of any of its products manufactured by American Nutrition."

I cant believe this... so label reading isnt an answer either... At least our fur babe seems okay and healthy... such a shame too... she really liked her new food and DH got mad at me for not buying more the other night... I forgot! Guess there was a reason...

Thank you so much for posting links!!!

I saw that Chloe's particular Hill's prescription foods are okay, as are the Wellness foods for Holly.

This whole thing though...is making me so angry it's sick!

Thank you so much for taking the time to research all of these resources for concerned pet parents!

I know that beyond two particular products for dogs Purina hasn't had any problems and that many people I know are feeding their cat's Pro Plan and Fancy Feast wet for the duration.

Innova is completely safe as well. They use all American ingredients apparently.

So far we've been really blessed as all we bought for our cats over the last year is Innova dry and Proplan wet.

Although I'm still cooking wet for them as honestly they eat it better than the canned stuff and it gives me peace of mind.
Innova EVO for dry until all this grain controversy is over. Then back to the low fat.

Thanks for the list! That's great!

My cats are happily enjoying Fancy Feast grilled foods these days as it seemed to be one of the few "ok" foods available. They are "whisker lickin' good" apparently!

We're feeding Innova EVO (grain free dry food) and Merrick wet (grain free canned) to our kitties. The companies that make these foods (Natura Pet and Merrick) both have what struck me as convincing rationales for believing their food is not contaminated - quality control measures and sourcing both. I think reading a company's literature on how they are ensuring food safety right now is important, although it wouldn't have prevented some of the issues with Blue Buffalo/Natural Balance, as there I believe it has been suggested there was deception on the part of the people who were manufacturing the food as to what was being included. It is very scary, and its important for all of us pet owners to stay on top of all the most recent developments since they are not as well publicized as they might be and the information can be confusing even when it is published. Thank you for posting those links.

it's so ridiculous that weeks later they are still going 'oh this is bad too'...how frustrating! i went through P's food and treats this last weekend and tossed anything with suspicious ingredients in it. so far right now she is just getting wellness dry kibble, the dehydrated chicken strips, liver biscotti, wellness soft treats, and candidae crunchy biscuits. i got some new organic all natural oat and apple cookies for her and she doesn't like them haha..but if they are left in her bowl long enough she will eventually eat it..too funny.

This is what happened to us. I switched our dog to Blue Buffalo from Nutro Natural because it seemed an overall safer option in the long run even though what we feed her had not been recalled by Nutro. I have the quote from Blue Buffalo's press release about the recall in my earlier post saying they didnt know the manuf. was putting the rice protein in their food. I dug a can out of the recycle bin and sure enough, rice protein is NOT listed as an ingrediant.

They recalled BB 3 weeks ago... and i JUST found out. I am so frustrated over this... how as a consumer are you supposed to pick something when the label is incorrect because the manuf. decides to make their own recipe!?

Thanks for posting this. The list is getting longer. :-(
I feel terribly sad for all those owners who lost their family members.

so it shows eukanuba as being recalled. and to click on eukanuba's website to find out which products. i went to their site and can't find anything about the recall. when the recall first started, eukanuba had a blurb on it's site. i think it was on thier home page. where did it go? i dunno. this is all just SO frustrating! i got some wellness samples of dry food from a local pet store. i've slowly been introducing it to cosmo, mixing it with eukanuba.

question, those who buy brands of dry dog food with different flavors, do you switch out the flavors, or are you consistent with one type?

Jcrow - I have noticed a lot of companies have moved thier recall info to their news or press release pages. http://us.eukanuba.com/eukanuba/global/EukanubaNews.htm

We stick to one flavor of dry food, but get a variety of wet food.

ok. for clarification of what i wrote earlier, looks like the eukanuba that i'm feeding cosmo isn't recalled. there's just a warning about an ingredient in a couple of their foods...

from: http://www.howl911.com/petfoodrecall_list.htm#dryfoods

" March 29, 2007
The below Eukanuba prescribed foods were the subject of an FDA warning letter because they contain a prohibited food supplement, chromium tripicolinate, the safety of which has not been studied in dogs or cats.Chromium tripicolinate has been linked to acute renal failure in humans. The Iams Co. has not stated a date by which time the compound - which continues to be listed as an ingredient on the Iams Web site - would be removed.

Eukanuba Veterinary Diets Optimum Weight Control dry
Restricted-Calorie/Canine dry and canned"

still depressing. and worrisome!
