In true Dee Jay fashion I am considering a project a$$ backwards. I have found a setting that I LOVE (have been OBSESSING about it for days now, and if you saw it you would say, um, WHAT *exactly* about this setting took ahold of you so?) and now I'm thinking about stones to go in it. (Yes, yes, I know, buy the stone FIRST and then have the setting MADE, LOL... )

Anyway, I have been thinking about a light yellow diamond for a while and have just started exploring the world of U-Z.

Will a diamond in this range really appear yellow or will it just look like I've got some bad dirty stone on my hand? (It will be in a VERY tiny pave halo of white diamonds sent it white gold, so hopefully that would provide *some* contrast.)

How much ligter is U-Z compared to fancy light yellow?

How much am I saving (or not) but looking in the U-Z range as opposed to FLY?

Does it really make a difference whether the prongs are white or yellow gold?

And in case anyone gets particularly motivated and wants to help fuel this latest obsession, I need an elongated radiant that's about 8 mm X 10 mm, so all potential rock suggestions will be considered!

Hi Dee*Jay,

I don't know enough to answer your question, but I came across this section of the DBL website awhile back and found it helpful. You can also look through their inventory to get an idea of what some of these color grades might look like compared to fancy yellows...

Jeff, DBL is a great site! I've spent so much time on there these past few days I'm surprised they haven't called me up and asked me to stop tying up their URL so other customers can get on, LOL!

One more thing I forgot to ask... Aside from DBL, does anyone know of any sites that list an inventory of yellow diamonds? I'm having a VERY hard time finding anywhere else to look.

It may still happen! The good thing about that link is that it shows you all of the different stones right next to eachother, and also has some pictures of them set in rings, usually next to colorless diamonds so you can get a good sense of the contrast. But, it seems you are already way ahead of me, so I'll go back to the corner to stare at my Leon picture... Good luck with the search, I am sure everyone wants to see the setting if you have a picture...

ETA: http://www.icestore.com/search/fancy_yellow_diamonds.asp (no pictures, but 366 yellows in their "inventory," whatever that means.

Hi,  DJ...I've never seen U-V diamond IRL either...but I'd guess that bezel setting it in a YG bezel  or prongs would help.

I think stones graded "light yellow" (by the GIA) are pale,  but definitely still yellow and not just dirty.

...but I bet you already knew all this,  didn't you?

I'm glad you have a different SETTING in mind if you're shopping DBL ... that is one place I always find something I'd like to *fix* about their pre-set rings.

Whoever is putting things together over there had a VERY different aesthetic sensibility than myself! Compare the profiles & scale & proportions to, say, the cushion beauty from ERD posted today (though the setting wasn't from ERD) or to your own "Brick".

Worlds apart.

Widget, I don't realy know what I know, LOL! I "get" the idea that they should be yellow but I can't wrap my arms around HOW yellow. Each one is so different that I have a hard time fixing in my mind, OK, THAT is a U-V looks like, versus THAT is what a Y-Z looks like.

And Deco, I'm with you on the setting thing! For a brief moment in time today I was like, WAIT, I'll just buy a whole RING from DBL! But then I looked for a while... and no... As for the setting I'm in love with, the thing that appeals to me the most is that it is SOOOO LOOOOOOW. Seriously, I need to find a stone with a max. depth of 6.5 or the culet might be in dange of scraping my finger. I've been trying to find something similar on the web to post but I haven't come across anything yet. I'll keep looking.

I ran across this site the other day- http://www.fancydiamonds.net/

I don't know anything about them, but maybe if someone else has purchased from them they can chime in.  They have a 5 ct light yellow that looks similar in color to what I think you're looking for...may help to compare against the U-Zs.

HI.  I have seen some Y=Z diamonds during my search.  Yes, they can be very nice light yellow, very similiar to FLY.  The settings are usually with Yellow gold progs or even yellow gold bezel to "help" the yellow out.
And, yes, you should save $$ by going to YZ.

BigDiamonds, thank you for that site; it's one that I hadn't come across yet.

yellowsparkles, thanks for the advice. The deeper I get into this the more I'm afraid I will have to have a custom setting made rather than just putting a stone in the setting that I found. Drat--I though this was going to be (somewhat) easy!!

Widget -- THANK YOU!!! The fist pic you posted is similar to what I'm thinking of, although the setting that I've found is a bit more delicate than the one in the photo. And yes, in terms of color that is exactly what I'm hoping for. The ones that get more into the higher fancy ranges are TOO yellow (and sometimes orangy) with my skin.

I just e-mailed DBL to inquire about a stone on their site. All fingers and toes crossed please! (Now of course I will be sitting here hitting the "refresh" button on my e-mail every 10 seconds until I hear back, LOL!)

I really like the color of that first one.

And now I'll be hitting refresh on this thread.

Ellen, if I actually find something and manage to have it all put together in a reasonable amount of time you'll be able to see it *for real* on your visit!

Good lord DeeJay, I don't know if I could handle the Eagle and this project all at once.

But I'd sure try....

I love light yellow diamonds, dee jay - I prefer them over the intense... I think anything under OP is going to be obviously yellow... so anything under that to z should be awesome!  I love the softer look they have, the more gentle color... you could look for one with brown, orange, or green undertones... I would go for orange and try to aim for a nice light yellow with some soft apricot in it.... those pastels are so lovely... post the setting willya??

I just had THE BEST conversation with David of DBL!!! I sent an e-mail inquiry about 9:45, and less than an hour and a half later David called me--amazing service! He gave me more of an education about yellow diamonds in 30 minutes than I had been able to glean off of all the posts I read and sites I've been visiting (obsessively) for the past several days.

Unfortunately the stone I was hoping for is not eye clean, but he suggested two others to me that aren't even on the website. And he was very good about keeping me within my budget (my *imaginary* budget that is--until a week ago I hadn't even been going down this path with any seriousness!)

Also, I've decided that maybe a$$ backwards is not the right way to go about this. I should find the stone first and have the setting built around it. I just wish I could find a pic similar to the one I like, but I'm going over to "visit" it on Friday so maybe they'll let me take a few photos of it. Really, I'm sure it's not THAT unique; it's just a very delicate pave halo with a pave band, but the part I can't seem to capture is the lowness of the setting. David has great taste BTW, he sent a setting suggestion to me that looks A LOT like my current Kelege, LOL.

And David asked me to pass on a big hello and his kind regards to everyone here at PS!

I love this project dee jay. I know you've been eyeing something yellow since my visit last november...Graff ring any bells. anyway, I think getting the stone first is a great idea. is it possible for the company who makes the setting you like to make one for the stone you get?

David sent me pics of some stones while we were on the phone, but the one that I'm thinking of at the moment he doesn't even have in-hand yet. It's a trade in from a customer (she's upgrading!) and it's not there yet.

And yes Mrs. S. *Graff* rings A LOT of bells!!!

BTW, I went out at lunch and visited a local jeweler and looked at some darker/fancier yellows. I definitely need to stay in the lighter range or else it looks like my whole hand is jaundiced, LOL!
