Hello everyone,

I need help! ArtCarved makes two rings with very similar style of the Hammer / Millgrain / Polish lip look. (Parrish and Woodbridge). It is offered in Palladium or 14k White Gold (both are comfort fit and 6mm wide). It is coming down to the metal basically, and artcarved offers the forever warranty which is really nice to boot.

But which would you pick and why? I think the Palladium would be nice since it's unique, but it's longevity is unproven and 14k white gold may need to be re-plated I'm assuming.

If you have any experience with either of these, or experience with the metal please let me know!

Sorry if this topic has been talked about in the past (I've read everything on here about Palladium that I could, but couldn't really find a good Palladium vs White Gold, mostly plat vs gold)

Thanks!

I haven't had direct experience, but here is a great article on alloys, and talks some about palladium.  I remember someone a while ago was going through the same dilemma as yourself, although I am not sure what he finally decided to do!

Both metals are durable and will last a very long time.  They will be similar in weight.

Palladium tends to be greyish in color once any rhodium wears off.  White gold may be a bit off-white, to the yellowish white or totally white dependiong on the exact nature of the alloys.  Some people have nickel allergies and some white gold still contains nickel.  A lot of white gold today is free of nickel and the related allergy problems.

Buy the one which costs less unless you feel you have a good reason such as matching metals to an engagement ring, etc.

Can anyone tell me if Palladium will also keep it's weight over time like Platinum does? (Where it doesn't lose the metal when it is dent, unlike gold)?

Thanks!

Palladium is more like platinum than like gold.  You can wear out a platinum ring, a gold ring or a palladium ring if it is worn all the time and for many years.  The metal can wear away in all three metals.  My experience says that the platinum metals outwear the white gold metals, but it takes many years for any meaningful difference to show itself.....Decades, not just a few years.

That's most important.  To answer in technical terms, palladium is from the platinum family of metals.  950 Palladium is 95% palladium by weight so it will behave like platinum.  18K Palladium White Gold is only 25% palladium so it will behave more like gold.

I can't really say anything about the particular artcarved band you are talking about.  However, I debated which metal to use for my fi's wedding band like you did.  I knew he wouldn't want to rhodium plate it, but I also knew that platinum would get very scratched up with him, and there was also a substantial price difference with platinum.  I own a palladium ring myself and love it!  I suggested this to fi and it's what we ended up getting him as well.  It was reasonably priced and he likes the more silver color of palladium, so it was a great metal for him.  Here is the link to his band: http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=58340
