I lost a diamond with the following details: style: oval brilliant measurements: 7.45 x 5.54 x 3.26 weight: 0.9 depth: 58.8 table: 56 girdle: medium to slightly thick, faceted polish: good symmetry: good clarity: vvs2 color: D Flurescence: none I have been offerred the following and told the value is pretty much the same (I'm not paying for the replacement directly but with a Gemcheck which is for the sum the jeweller told me to insure the diamond for): shape: oval brilliant measurements: 7.16 x 5.28 x 3.58 weight 0.91 depth: 67.8 table: 55 girdle: medium to thick faceted cutlet: none polish: good symmetry: good clarity: vs1 color: d fluorescence: medium blue comments:internal graining is not shown do you think this is a fair replacement? if not, is it just the clarity that makes you think this diamond is worth less or is it also the cut and flurescence. also what does "internal graining not shown" mean. any ideas how much less the replacement is worht? Please can you help me I really don't want to be awkward to the jeweller but I also don't want to look at the replacement diamond for the rest of my life and think I was misled |

The market value of both diamonds is indeed almost the same. I would think that the new one is about 5 to 7% lower in value, if you can buy both of them at this very point in time. In looks however, there is a great difference. Just compare the diameters. Length: 7.16 compared to 7.45 Width: 5.28 compared to 5.54 The problem is that your original diamond is quite un-deep, and thus covers a very big area. It is rather difficult to find a similar diamond nowadays, without it clearly weighing more. Of course, this difference in depth also has an effect on the light performance, but it is difficult to say which one would score better, with such limited data. Hope this helps, Paul Paul Slegers |

Yes, the depth on your original diamond was much better. Your old diamond had a length of 7.45 mm and a width of 5.54mm. The one they want to replace it with is 7.16 x 5.18. Excuse me! That will not look nearly as big nor be nearly as well cut. The extra 0.01ct means nothing when your new diamond will be carrying all that weight in the depth. In addition, a drop in clarity and medium blue flourescence on a D diamond will both devalue it even more. This does not sound like a good deal to me. But I'm just a consumer, maybe the experts can tell you how close you can reasonably expect to get. I see your problem. The insurance company with the jeweler are trying to take advantage of you like they do everyone else. I might also add, for starters, the the insured rarely wins against the insurance company. Here is the deal. You insured your diamond for $XXX. You lost your diamond and your insurance company does not want to pay you $XXX cash for your diamond. They want to get your jeweler to find a "comparable" diamond that you will take for your loss. They will also be paying much less than $XXX for your loss if they can get you to take that diamond. If the jeweler cannot find you a .90 - .94 carat, D color VVS2 or better with about the same shape or better with none or faint fluorescence TRY to get the cash and buy what you want. Many states require the insurance company to pay the cash rather than find a comparable. All states should do the same. Do not let the insurance company walk on you. They are making millions off all of us that never make a claim. Good luck! dimonbob, GG |

thanks for all your advice. you have given me the confidence to ask the jeweller to carry on searching. they were very happy to do this.
