Hi, I have a white spinel ring which I received about 50 years ago. I can't find much info about white spinel. Should I assume that this is a synthetic?? Or could it be a natural white spinel? It's an 8 x 6 mm emerald cut in a 14KT ring. Thanks Ger

Using Occam's Razor, the fact the stone is calibrated argues for synthetic in my opinion. A huge amount of synthetic spinel was used in class rings, birthstone rings and other jewelry from the 1920s on, often posing as other gems, especially blue sapphire. Natural white spinel isn't common and probably have been cut for yield, not to a specific size. That's just my best guess; a test may prove otherwise. Richard M. |
