Not being a professional, is there an obvious way to tell a real diamond from a fake CZ thru a 15x loop?

CZ isn't fake. It is a real mineral. The biggest difference, that you probably don't need a loupe for, is CZ looks more glassy or even a little like plastic. At least I think so. Also, you will notice more of a rainbow effect with a lot of blue showing through in the CZ. As Rhino puts it, no "sizzle" with CZ like you see in a well cut diamond. If you have the time, go to any jewelry store and you will probably be able to look at both side by side to see the difference. Once you see it, I don't think you'll be confused anymore. A lot of jewelers will show their mountings with CZ as the center stone. It should say it on the tag and if it doesn't, just ask. If the jeweler is honest and good they will take the time to explain the difference. After all, they want to sell diamonds, not CZ.
