I was at a baby shower at work today. We had tons of fun and laughed a lot! A great break from work.  Anyways, my co-worker doesn't know the sex of her baby. One of my other co-worker's brought up an old wives tale about predicting the sex of your baby. It's so interesting! I've seen this once before on TV (over a pregnant belly) but never thought it was real. And I never knew you could do it over your palm.Here's what you're suppose to do - 1) Put a (preferably gold) pendant over your hand between your index and thumb fingers. The clasps part is supposed to be on you palm side of your hand with the pendant dangling on the outside of your hand. 2) Hold it directly above your other hand's palm. The same goes for holding over pregnant belly. 3) Slowly put the pendant all the way down on your palm of the hand and pull it back up and hold your hand steady. 4) Wait a minute for it to start moving. Here's what it means - If it's circling, it's a girl and if it's swaying back and forth, it's a boy! 5) Repeat Steps 1-4, until the pendant no longer moves. It also tells you how many children you'll have! I was amazed! And I quickly went home to try it on myself. Of course I don't know if it's accurate though because I don't have any children yet. My co-worker has done this on many people and it's almost ALWAYS correct! She tried it on a few co-workers who have children and it came up correct every time. So I want to know for the mothers out there, does this work on you? Is it accurate? By the way, this only works on women. |

I've heard a few variations of this - one is the ghetto version where you used a pencil, thumb tack, and string, and another where you use your wedding ring instead of the pendant. And it's always over the stomach, never the hand. One of my teachers swore by it (she did the wedding band version). It predicted ALL of her children correctly, including her miscarriages. It was something like 6-7 children predicted correctly (and of course when she had it done, she dismissed it because she said she would never allow herself to have that many kids - she didn't know at the time that only 2 of them would be viable pregnancies). I've read up on the science behind it - appparently it's supposed to be you doing it on a subconscious level. Like if you have a strong desire to have one gender, or a certain number of kids, or previous indiciations of what the gender will be, you subconsciously move the chain/string in the correct manner. I personally don't believe in it, but I do find it interesting that it predicted 6-7 correct children for one person.

My paternal grandmother always used to do it. She would use a needle dangling from a thread held between her thumb and pointer finger. Back and forth = a girl, circle = a boy. She would do it over bellies or the under side of your wrist. I always made her do it to me, but unfortunately I cant remember what she predicted for me because I was too little. She would rest the tip of the needle on your wrist and pull it back up to predict each child. Earlier this year 2 co-workers were pregnant so we decided to try it on them. It was right for both... one had a boy, the other a girl. We also started going around the office and holding the needle over pictures and co-workers... right everytime. I also saw a show on like Discovery Health about mid-wives and there was one that always did the needle test before she did an ultrasound to find out a babies sex... she was something like 95%+ right.

I don't think it's at a subconscious level because you get the same thing every time (even if someone does it for you)! That's what I find really odd. How can it be the same every time?

There are lots of gender prediction tools. Try this Chinese Lunar Calendar which was accurate for me & just about everyone else I know. Or, try out this questionnaire which has a whole bunch of old wives tales rolled into one.

The only prediction that worked for me was a sonogram or amnio LOL. All the predictions that were non medical based were wrong. Chinese calender, shape of my belly, etc. My favorate (insert sarcasm) was when I was pregnant with one of my boys, I had several strangers tell me that I must be having a girl because girls "steal your looks" and I was not looking my best. Umm, excuse me how rude is that!!!!! I had dark circles under my eyes that whole pregnancy from insomnia.

VegasAngel, I've seen the Chinese Birth Calendar. What a great tool to use if you're trying for a boy or girl. We might use it when the time comes. asscherisme, what a rude comment!! I can't believe several strangers said that to you!

OK, so have you heard the one about peeing on crystallized Drano? Seriously, I know people who swear by that one. Supposedly it turns different colors for the different genders. Think about it, though--if there was something in the mother's urine that told the sex of the baby, shy wouldn't they just do it the the doctor's office along with your pg test? "Congratulations, you're pregnant . . . with a girl!" My personal favorite, though, was how "everyone" could tell I was having a boy because I "carried so low". I heard that with all four of my pregnancies--two girls and two boys!

The carrying low one cracked me up too. I carried high my first two and carried low the second two. It has to do with where your uterous is, the shape of your body and more anatomical issues with the mother and has nothing to do with the baby LOL. So at the end of the pregnancy when many women drop, I guess the gender changes from gril to boy? :)

Ha the carrying low cracks me up. Every time I went to get a pedicure, the nail tech would tell me I was definitely having a boy. When I would tell them girl they would literally argue with me. I would tell them I had an amnio & was getting ultrasounds 2x a week i'm 100% sure girl. They would still say "You carry low it's a boy!" I did read about the Drano during my pregnancy. It was hard enough trying to aim in cup at the dr's office I sure wasnt going to try peeing into a cup of drano, a chemical. good grief I tell ya. Some of the owt's are crazy. Everyone thought I was having two boys by the way I carried them. I had two girls. Personally, I don't believe in ANY of these gender prediction methods and I figure they are ALL correct about 1/2 of the time.

With my first, I carried low. I knew I was having a girl, but everyone said nope you're having a boy. Had a girl, hehe. My second I carried much lower than the first, was tiny except for the little basketball I was carrying. It was a boy. My pregnancies were totally different. With my daughter everything swelled even went up a shoe size!! With my son I was tiny, not a big weight gain, but gained the same amount with both about 28 pounds or so. These OWT's are kind of funny. My cousin had an ultrasound with her first and was told it was a girl. She was very surprised when the Doc said congrats, you have a baby boy!!! I have heard of the Draino too. Like who comes up with these things?? Too funny!!!

Snlee, I'd never tried this before but I've seen my cousins, sisters, and aunts do it and it worked everytime! They held a needle and thread over their wrists I think. So, I finally just tried it on myself finally and it says I'll have Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy! I'll let you know in about 10 years if it's right
