My new Stress - What should my Mom wear? |

Ladies, I am having an aweful time trying to find something that would be appropriate for my Mom to wear to my wedding. She's short and still has a little tummy- her legs are uneven so she need to wear something long and looks best in structured pieces- but I'm NOT finding anything that looks 1/2 decent. My dress is ivory and my BM dress are gold and our flowers are Red. Any advice? What did your mom wear?

I'm starting to wonder what my mom is going to wear to my wedding. She carries all of her weight in her tummy and chest and is notorious for being stuck in the 80's (she never stopped wearing shoulder pads, leggings or a fanny pack  ). My bridesmaid dresses are going to be black and both my mom and FMIL are sooo happy that they can wear black and not look out of place. I think black is very flattering on everyone and it sounds like it would go well with your color scheme. What about one of those suit-like outfits that have the long flowy skirts? Or something a bit more structured? Here are some things I found:

we had the most luck with dillards. and different ones carry different stock. good luck.

Indi, my mom is short and a little bit fluffy and also had a hard time so she had a dress custom made. It was a very simple long dress with spaghetti straps and a fancy short jacket thing that went over it. It was elegant, classy, structured and made her look amazing! You may want to have your mother go the custom route. Also, depending on when your wedding is, the mom colors seem to be eggplant, maroon, burgundy, taupe or shades of brown! That's what I've seen on all the moms at weddings that I've been to. I had a black tie winter wedding and my mother's aubergine colored dress was perfect.

Indi, If you go to www.foreverbridals.com They have BEAUTIFUL mother of the bride dresses... I am just itching for my mom to get one... AND they are very affordable. I know there are online websites that sell the line as well... all of their dresses are affordable.. for example.. my bridesmaid dresses from them are $108!!! wooohoo Hope this helps!

My mom also had hers custom made as she is a little fluffy as well (LOVE description!). She had a long skirt and jacket made and wore a nice silk shell she already owned. Her dress was a dark royal blue with black accents... very cool fabric... dont have a pic of it here at work. Jader - which dress did you pick out? My BM dresses wore #75102. I thought Forever Bridals was great (and cheap to boot!)!

I am in a similar dilemman, although mine is probably a bit more challenging. I am an older first time bride to begin with, plus I was a Late in life baby for my mom- sooooo... my mom is 79 years young. she's in great shape for 79, but still! since my 3 bm's are also my sisters, i am making "take mom dress shopping" a bridesmaid to-do item. Phew!!

Sorry to hijack...  Very nice! I found that style VERY flattering on all shapes and sizes... I had it all... short/tall, size 2/14, no boobs/Double Ds! Was at a wedding this weekend were the MOH obviously picked the dress and it didnt look as nice on the other girls as it did her.

I gotta say that I don't understand this stress at all, or at least why it should be the bride's stress. Do you not trust her to pick out something appropriate? Can't you just send her off to her local department store and tell her to pick out something she likes and looks good on her (or give her some color options if you feel the need for her to be color coordinating)?

My boyfriend's mom is going through this right now, to find something to wear to his sister's wedding. If moms haven't been to a lot of weddings recently, its hard to know whats appropriate. Personally, I prefer two piece outfits, with a skirt and a structured jacket style shirt. It looks simple, flattering, and age appropriate on most women. I'm not a fan of the beauty queen gown type styles, or sequins, or prom hair--it just looks so unnatural on most moms.

I kind of agree with Kismet. I just let my mom pick out any dress she wants in any color she wants. She ended up with a two pieces strapless modified A-line dress in lavender and I thought she looks fabulous. My mom is 54 and carries most of her weight around her waist and stomach. Wow, your mom does not look 54! She looks fabulous! (Not that you can't look fab at 54). I think I'm worried mostly about what my mom will do with her hair for my wedding. She seemed shocked that I want to get my hair done by a professional (hello, I had it done for every prom and homecoming I ever went to why wouldn't I get it done for my wedding?!?!). She has this crazy frizzy hair that she's never been able to control. I remember being so embarrassed about it when I was younger. If she actually gives in and gets it done I'm sure it will be fine, but she's stubborn and will probably try to save money by not getting it done. I don't know, maybe it would be weird if she had perfect hair...

Kismet, I absolutely do not trust her to pick out something! She's an awesome/smart woman but she doesn't know how to find things that look good on her. She's cheap to- which isn't a problem if she buys a dress that looks nice on her but the combination of not knowing what to buy and being cheap often leaves her looking bad.... I asked my sister/ MOH to take care of it and she flatly refused b/c the task can be so difficult! I'd like for her to not wear black as my wedding is at 4:30 in July- but dark brown would look great on her and would go with everything. I'd like to find her a suit look, maybe with a jacket that has a sweetheart neckline- Ann Taylor had this jacket about 2 year ago and I haven't been able to find anything since. Definitely nothing sleeveless, nothing short, must be structured, no flowy-ness- see why this is a struggle ?

Does it have to be a dress/skirt? My mom never ever ever wears dresses or skirts (I've seen her try on a skirt once in my life and it freaked me out), so at least I knew what she would not be weairng. She did want to wear black at first (for a morning wedding in the Nevada desert!) but I talked her out of it. She ended up wearing tan slacks and a flowy-ish off-white shirt with a little bit of beading. She looked perfect! I guess my advice is just to make sure she's comfortable.

I'd take a look at the Watters and Watters collection. www.watters.com They have a number of longer, two piece looks that are great for moms. That's what I was thinking about doing for my mom, who also carries alot of weight in her midsection...
