Hi All,

Have found this website to be a great help so far! Just thought i would put a question out there, my boyfriend and i are about to embark on a round the world trip to South Africa (Johannesburg, CapeTown), London, Boston, New York and San Fransico- Because i am the shopper- i have been given the pleasure of researching where the best place would be to buy an egagement ring. Does anyone have any advice? We are from Australia so our dollar isnt very strong in any country except SA.

Thanks

diamond prices are independant of local currencies - they are a bit like gold.

The answer to your question depends more on you and your nature and desires for service type etc than locale.

In some places you can make a tax saving.

You may even do that to claim back GST in Australia as you leave the country if you purchased within a month of leaving

Personally, I'd buy in Australia just because if you have a problem with it it will be more easily sorted out there. If you do find a ring already made that is your dream ring, by all means buy it! I find Australian prices to be fair- if you want yellow or white gold 18k is the norm so it will be easy for you to match with other jewellery- If you prefer platinum or brand name items it might be better to get in the US- more variety, more accessible- but the fashion is very different to Aussies who seem to still favour yellow gold, plainer settings, smaller diamonds.
