Last spring I had this problem. The squirrels would get up under my hood and chew the contact wires to my engine. The mechanic said rabbits and other small animals do this to keep warm and since they chew all the time, the wires are just handy for them. I started parking in the garage. Then during the summer I would park in the drive way and never had a problem. Well, now that it's getting cold again, they did it again! We thought they would forget about it, but apparently they have longer memories than one might imagine. This time hubby fixed it and I'm back in the garage again. What's really weird is that all three times they got in there and chewed my wires it was between the time I take my 9 year old to school at 8:00 am and when I would leave later in the day. It never happened at night, as one might expect because it's warmer, but the car always started fine in the morning and only my second trip of the day was the problem. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Opinions are like belly buttons. That is so weird! Maybe they only get into your car after the first trip because it is warm. At night it would get cold pretty quickly, right? Anyway, I hope you find a way to fix it... maybe they have something that repels squirrels that you could put out?? I just don't know. Very weird though! Marisa ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* |

My fi works someplace with a lot of open space nearby and they used to have a dreadful mice problem. The same thing happened fairly frequently. People would drive to work, come out 8 hours later and their cars wouldn't start! I don't know if the recent construction in the area scared them off or if the company used an exterminator but I haven't heard about it lately.

This is strange... My parents' home is in the woods, so there are a lot of squirrels, mice, etc., but that never happened...

I've actually heard that one of the reasons you aren't allowed to leave a car parked a week at a time in my city is that rats will climb into your car and chew on the wires. Pretty creepy! I guess it could happen with squirrels, but we don't have any here!

Weird! They must love the taste of your car wiring. But only for breakfast or lunch.

I don't know how it would work on wires, but we were told to sprinkle cayenne red pepper on some of the bird seed the squirrels seemed to be taking out of our bird feeder, and it worked!
