Hi everyone, I've been lurking for a bit but decided since most of us are planning weddings, why don't we start a post about weddings we've atended or heard about where there was something quite memorable? I'll start.  1. I heard about a wedding where the cake topper was a spun sugar cage with two white cooing doves inside. After the ceremony, the bride and groom released the doves. 2. My parents attended a wedding where everyone formed a circle around the bride and groom during their first dance and dance along with them. My parents really liked this since they felt included. 3. I like programs where they include photos of their family. One of friends had photos of both sets of parents on their respective wedding days. |

Ummm, I hope they also had newspaper on the bottom of the sugar cage, or weren't planning on eating their top layer, cause birds poo a LOT!I remember this wedding I attended when I was in high school where the guests didn't blow bubbles at the couple while they were leaving the church or the reception hall. Instead, we all stood around them during their first dance and blew bubbles at them then. It was really cute, seeing them dancing together with bubbles all around, and we got to "participate" in the dance too.

At my cousins wedding, she had a looping slide show of pictures: of their childhood, first dating, parents, cousins, friends, throughout their eight year courtship. Since she lives in Cali and I in Illinois it was nice to sort of 'get to know' them through those pictures and it was nostalgic to see old pictures of us as kids. Of course there were friends and such I didn't know, but it ran all night long and anytime there was a lull, you could always watch the slideshow.

At my sister's wedding reception, rather than kiss everytime people started banging their glasses they made the guests serenade them with a song to persuade them to kiss. Been to a couple of weddings where they have a Chinese Lion dance as part of the reception, also hula dances.

I think weddings that incorporate traditional "rituals" from the bride's and/or groom's heritage/ethnic background are extremely memorable. For example, I'm Armenian and besides having my ceremony in an Armenian church, at my reception we had an Armenian band that played Armenian songs and we did traditional folk dances. Even the guests from different backgrounds were so intrigued and entertained that they joined in and had a blast! I also attended a Persian wedding ceremony in LA and while I didn't understand what was being said, I was absolutely fascinated by the rituals of the ceremony. It was one of the best experiences of my life! I think anything that breaks away from the typical wedding standards can make a wedding truly stand out in your memory.

Instead of regular favors a wedding I went to had a table full of the couple's favorite books. All of them had inscriptions in them saying why that book was special to them. We really liked that touch and I think of the wedding everytime I look at the book I picked.

Thanks for the welcome! Ummm, I hope they also had newspaper on the bottom of the sugar cage, or weren't planning on eating their top layer, cause birds poo a LOT! Haha, I did wonder about this and never found out how the couple prevented the birds from adding flavor to their cake.  Yeah, I've always liked cultural elements in a wedding. Even thinking about getting some Lion Dancers for my reception, but balked at the price. It's $700 for 10-30 min, includes the percussion. Keep those posts coming!

Ok, I'll add one. A few years back, a friend of mine married and they had a traditional catholic ceremony, but later in the afternoon, they held a Celtic hand fasting ceremony outdoors, with all the guests in the round. It was quite lovely and all felt they were part of something special for the bride & groom (both of Irish descent). Clarygrace |
