Okay, I have been wanting to ask this for a while and for some reason have not felt comfortable posting this question, but it is bugging me to the point that I have to ask because it may make me change my mind about what we do, and I could not find a thread specifically about this when I looked previously... many psers have stones that are above usps limit for insurance. For those of you who have had to ship stones or stones in settings above this limit, how did you do it? I used usps before and came right up to the limit - the next stone will likely go over. What does the consumer do for insurance in this case? I hopefully would not need to return a stone, but I am the type of person that likes to be completely (over)prepared. Plus, I may need to ship a stone down the road to change a setting, etc. I read that the vendors have more options b/c they are businesses, but my understanding is that usps is what the rest of us have to use. Can you tell me what the limit is?? I have to send my oval to be set. In the past I have used USPS, from what I have read on here it's the best way to go. Slow but safe. What if you want to overnite a stone??? Then what??

I had this problem for the first time recently, and ended up shipping my ring by armored currier! In my case, it was Brinks. I don't think they're too used to dealing with a one-time individual (as opposed to a business acct), but they'll do it. The one catch is that they do not pickup/deliver to residences. This would be no problem if you or your fiance(e) could arrange for delivery to/from your place of work. In my case (I'm retired), I arranged to have my ring delivered to my bank. I don't know if they're any safer than USPS, but there was something rather comforting about handing over my treasure to a guy with a gun! LOL widget

If you prefer to mail USPS, then insure your package for the $25K ( make sure you can prove that your ring/stone cost at least this much....receipt, etc) and then send it Registered mail, would be my suggestion. Every person at the PO handling it has to sign for it. My jeweler mails this way..... Also, if the piece is insured, your INS company may come in on coverage over the 25K amount....you should check with them first. In the end, it's your own insurance coverage that would be the bottom line, so to speak.....with stores, their coverage is there for them when they mail to YOU ( if you are buying from them )....or so my understanding goes. Best to always ask so you will know, for sure. Susi |

You have to use registered mail to have the option of up to $25,000 insurance. I think the max on other mail is only $5000. But I agree with Susi, I'd check with your own insurance to make sure the amount above $25,000 would be covered by them.

Ah yes, I see - the insurance company would cover for above the limit. That makes me feel better for once I have the stone, if I decide to change the setting down the road  , or if it needs work.Another part of this, however, is if the stone is in the purchasing stage, and in the return period (hence I would not be purchasing insurance for it, as I would be in the examination stage), then what would be the options if it wasn't a keeper? Has this ever happened before to anyone? Do you purchase insurance through an insurance company to cover a week for transport back? Is that allowed? I hope this wouldn't happen, but I want to know what to do in case it does. Thanks again

I can see them pulling up to the bank, walking in, and instead of walking up to the manager, walking into the lobby and up to me with a little package! That would get some bewildered stares! LOL! How long does it take to ship that way? I presume it is all by ground transport, so if it were traveling a great distance it may take several days?
