I am in the market for a Radiant diamond. I want to spend about $13k-15k with the setting and all. I have seen a few that I discussed in a previous post, but haven't gotten much in the way of a response. I want to be in the 1.5 range. She has a small hand and is a teacher, but I want to stay in that range as I do want her to be able to show it off. She likes the Radiant cut, or at least a rectangle (not emerald), but that's about all the guidance I have. Is there another cut I should look at? What should I be looking for in a Radiant? I know that color isn't that different from D-F, but the two Ds I have seen have had great cuts, so they just look much better. I really like one that is a 1.53 carat raadiant, but it goes from a thick girdle to a thin girdle on one indented natural. My jeweler says that it won't effect the mounting at all, but I know it could chip there. How much more likely is it to chip there then elsewhere? I really love the stone, it's exactly what I want, except the natural. The specs of it are in my other post, but can reproduce them here. Where else can I look to find a Radiant with similar characteristics? |

Hi there, You probably aren't getting much of a response, because not many people here know much about radiants, not because people don't want to help you. Is it possible you could post a picture of the certification of the radiant you love with the indented natural? Experts here could look at it and suggest whether is truly is a problem. If it's the stone you love, you might want to consider purchasing it. Girdle chipping is rare, but sometimes is does happen. I would suggest purchasing insurance for your ring no matter what stone you end up with.

I really don't think anyone here can tell you the likelihood of your stone chipping without seeing it in person. Some people suggested you take it to an independent appraiser, and I think this is your best bet. The jeweler is trying to sell you a diamond, so of course he/she will tell you it won't affect the mounting, but the only way to know for sure is to have an expert inspect it.

I remember you now! That stone had an extremely thin girdle and an indented natural...I am a bit worried by that combo. I wouldn't have been that worried just about the natural. As coda suggested, try to have it independently appriased by a gemologist not affiliated with your jeweler. You can often do this before purchase, and you must absolutely do this before it's mounted so they can fully evaluate the stone.

The Jeweler told me that the only reason the girdle is listed as extremely thin is that the natural is at the girdle, the whole rest of the way around it is thick. The specks are: Measurements: 7.70 x 6.45 x 3.91 mm Weight: 1.53 Depth 60.6% Table 65% Girdle Extremely Thin to Thick Culet None Polish Good Symmetry Good Clarity Grade VS2 Color Grade D Flourescence None Feather Indented Natural (It has an indented natural at the tip of one of the cut corners on the longer side of the diamond. It is on the girdle. My Jeweler has told me that the girdle for mounting is fine. It has an extra facet as well)

I'm too hesitant to say whether that would be a problem or not. I would seriously consider having it appriased by a gemologist before purchase (or after if you have a good return policy). Only they could really say whether it's a problem or not. The rest of the specs look great.
