Our wedding is still two years away, so we haven't been doing any intensive planning, but it's funny because a lot of things seem to just fall into place anyway!

So how this happened is that I've been playing the trumpet in school and amateur senior bands since I my first year of High School 10 years ago. The musical director of the senior band I've played in for the last three years is a music teacher and studied the trumpet in college; of course she has a lot of contacts in the professional music world and has a lot of friends who professional musicians as well. I've known her for about 8 years.

The year's first band practice was yesterday and I went to see her to give her the good news of my engagement (and she yelled it to the whole band, it was pretty funny) and she asked me if I wanted her to play at my wedding. I was pleasantly surprised by the offer, because I had been thinking about it. My little church doesn't have a pipe organ (which is a pity because I adore organ music), and as a music lover and amateur musician for most of my life (I started at 4!), a little piano organ wouldn't do for my wedding! So I told her I'd been thinking about asking her to put together a brass quintet (brass are my favorite instruments, obviously ) for the ceremony music; I knew she could put something that would be beautiful and powerful and would fit my budget. And she said: "Of course I'll do it! And for friends, we do for free."

So our date is already booked in her schedule, and we'll talk again about what the specifics a few months before the wedding. I'm so happy and excited, it'll be perfect!!

It's been 16 years, but honestly, if I'm remembering correctly, it was the Kentucky Derby theme. She didn't want "here comes the bride" at all!

ETA: It was "My Old Kentucky Home". I just googled it and the synthesized version sounds a little tinny but I can still here the trumpet playing it clear and loud. It was lovely. Kind of an odd choice though since she's a Texan.

AWESOME news, Anchor!

I so wanted "live" music for my ceremony.  I lucked out and found a great harpist.  I get teary-eyed when I hear her song samples.

sumbride - How interesting and unique! I definitely want "Here comes the bride" for myself, and I'm thinking about Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary for the wedding party.

ChargerGrrl - There was no question of not getting live music for my ceremony! It would be blasphemy for someone who grew up in music. I'm really thrilled, and a brass quintet really screams "me". Not to mention that brass sounds amazing in churches!

I couldn't agree more, wife2B! It's the most beautiful gift she could ever give me. J and I will definitely be offering her a nice gift as a thank you. I'm not sure what yet, but we'll think of something...
