What are we to make of the "sticker price" on diamonds at retail stores? I was told that the sticker price is the "market value" of the diamond; does this have anything to do with Rapaport pricing? I had posted earlier with the following two diamonds trying to determine which was the better value at $9800. Both are GIA Certified Princess cuts: Carat Co Cl Depth Tbl Gdl Cul Sym Pol Flr Measurements 1.77 E SI1 74.90% 76.00% med-thk no vg ex fnt 6.67x6.54x4.87 1.60 F SI1 68.90% 75.00% med-thk no g vg fnt 6.75x6.43x4.43 OK; so the 1.77 appears on paper to be the better of the two although I thought the 1.60 had more shine to it. The strange thing was the price for the 1.77 was $19K and the price for the 1.60 was $27K. Both stores are reputable dealers in the area. Any comments on what is printed on the sticker/UPC label? Thanks |

NiceIce, a few answers; thanks for your input: 1) Have you run a search on PS for comparable princess cut diamonds? Those prices look pretty steep! The prices I mentioned; 19K and 27K, were the "sticker prices" I was referring to. I use the term sticker prices loosely as I don't know what else to call them. "Their" prices were listed below this sticker price; 11K and 13.5K respectively. Both jewelers would go as low as $9800 each. I have looked on PS for comparable princess cuts, but don't seem to have much luck. The ones I do see are either too rectangluar for my taste, or "appear" to be cut too deep (from my research). 2) Rap prices are supposed to be "suggested wholesale asking price" however there is a lot that can be hidden in pricing a diamond based on Rap - proportions have a lot to do with discounts off of Rap and premiums charged over Rap... The Guide is a much better reference. Is there any place a consumer can view the guide without paying the $200+ yearly subscription? 3) Do either of these diamonds exhibit any crown height? I will need to check into this, but if in fact there is crown height as you mention, I assume that would make the smaller stone stand out more than the larger stone; thus another mitigating factor in the price. 4) How did the store explain the difference in price? The store attributed their higher cost for the smaller stone to its cut and depth. They claimed the depth and cut give the stone fire; which indeed it does. Ultimately, my question is this: Is sacrificing .17 carat worth the depth % difference; assuming they are the same cost? Thanks.

Okay, the prices make more sense now... The jewelers are stating the higher prices as what they think the diamonds would sell for at full retail. We understand. As far as we know, the only way to access The Guide is to buy it... The odds are that we would choose the better cut of the two diamonds over size... From across the rrom, the sparkle will be seen more than the size... Todd L. Gray, President |
