A hypothetical question here:

If you own what you consider a horrible diamond - say an old .25 carat diamond or so that is either chipped or has noticeable inclusions or cut badly or poor colour, etc. etc.

Would you keep it apart from sentimental reasons?

Say if it still sparkled or just to add to your collection it is still another diamond after all.

or

Would you give it away, say to a younger person in their teens, daughter, family friend, grand daughter, even son/grandson if they had a piercing.

Just wondering leave it in a box where no one sees it or give it away or wear it

any other scenarios - it is just a hypothetical question after all.

Hi Pyramid

I think I would keep it from a " gemological" point of view, as I find inclusions interesting.  If it sparkled and looked half way decent from a distance I might set it in a pendant or something, but if it was really included that I wasn't comfortable wearing it, then I would just keep it anyway.  It definitely would have some value to me as it is still a diamond.  I would have fun with a loupe trying to identify the inclusions and doing my own map!  The colour wouldn't worry me even if it was an O or P etc, maybe I don't have much of an eye for colour, but I like the warm colours anyway.

I had one of those...and I'm not afraid to say that before I found PS I gave it away to my "little sister." I met her and mentored her through

Hi!  I have a 1.15 round brilliant piece of frozen spit (I didn't choose it - got it as a birthday present) that I plan to trade in if anyone would take it.

I have a .50 very so so cut round in a pendant my dad had made for me. It came from his second wifes engagement ring. Having seen the light and now have a beautiful new ER and new studs, it doesn't "go" with them at all. However, my dad meant the world to me, (he's gone now), and I wouldn't dream of getting rid of it. So I'll keep it forever, and maybe wear it it occasionally.

I do have one of those hehe. My original ering stone was a .25ct, K in color I think, and I3 for clarity. It was cut very deep. I kept it. At first I just kept it in the jewelry box but then I got a white gold setting from Jareds on clearance and put it in that. It looks better in the setting and if I clean it religiously it doesn't look TOO bad!

See most people keep their diamonds.  I have one which is about 18 points which I have kept but would give it to a younger member of the family someday, say when they are maybe 13 or 14.

Apart from the sentimental reasons, it seems that diamonds are still diamonds and so worth something to us.

I have a pair of studs that are tiny, not well cut, and not very sparkley.  I have kept them so far mostly because I don't think I'd get more than $100 for them and it's not really worth it to trade in.  I don't wear them though, but I might give them to a younger female relative if I get the chance someday.

I gave the very small diamond studs I was given on my 18th birthday to my oldest daughter on her 18th birthday. They are small enough that they could be decent quality, but who knows?  I have a 1.5 ctw pair of studs that were pre-PS, and I am saving those to give to her later! The youngest daughter will just have to wait until I'm gone to get my new studs which will be ideal cut!  Same situation with my e-ring diamond. The old one is 1 ct. but I don't even care to reset it but will save it to hand down to one of the girls. Most people are really clueless about diamond quality, so there are plenty of people who'd be happy to get diamond hand-me-downs as gifts!

~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~
i have two badly cut stones
one was a pendant i found on the ground. it is 43 points, noticeably out of round, and basically no crown. I had it set in a king arthur's seat setting. the jeweler did a magnificent job of selecting that setting which fools the eye into thinking that it is a princess cut. i plan to keep it. the lack of crown results in only white light return with big black and white chunky flashes of light. it is fascinating.
another is an YG eighties cluster with a badly cut center stone. I am keeping it until YG comes back into style.
