Sorry guys I finally figured it out but I posted the poll like 5 times. I piked number 11. I wonder if I can edit the poll to put the numbers in. (I am currently reseraching everything and picking everything out myself. Mike looked with me once but then he realized he didnt have the money yet to buy. He told me to find the perfect diamond and setting and then when he has the money we'll go together to look at it. OH and age wise I'm 23 and Mike is 22

My FI is 24 and I am 21. I researched a LOT; him, not so much. I picked "other" however, because I did the research on my own, but we picked it out together on our second shopping trip.

We went to look the first time to get an idea of what I liked and what kind of budget we needed and we found out that we really liked the look of a .5ct RB on my size 4.5 finger (.5ct is huge in my area, btw! ). He kept saving up and three months later, we went to meet a jeweller we had both heard about, hoping he could help us get our dream ring for our budget. I'd seen the setting on his website and had really liked it; when I tried it on I was in love!! Our jeweller then helped us find an amazing .5ct centerstone for our budget and we are THRILLED with our ring!

A lot of people say that picking out the ring together kills the romance, but they are so wrong!!! For us, it's a day we'll always remember, we were so happy! I'll always cherish the memory of him driving me back home with a grin on his face, saying "I'm really happy about this."

Other. We picked it together, though I probably had more input.

I originally wanted a colored stone, but he wanted a diamond because he was worried a colored stone wouldn't look like a "real" engagement ring. He was kind of lukewarm and apprehensive about my suggestion that we buy online, so we went to look at some mall stores. Looking at the rings there convinced him that we could get something better online for the price, and gave him an idea of his tolerance for color and clarity (which ended up being stricter than mine). I picked the setting, and then he worked with that vendor to pick the stone, since we did not want to deal with sending the diamond around and all that hassle. After he picked the stone he let me "approve" it and I changed my mind a few times, but I think what we got is perfect.

I haven't seen it yet, but it's going to be gorgeous! I love how it was a cooperative effort...if I had bought it for myself, I probably would have gotten something a little different, but it's a combination of what I wanted and what he wanted and perfect in that way. We mostly emailed about it at work, but we talked about it a lot too. I had a lot of fun with it and it was so cute the night he called up to explain how he'd be reading about diamonds on the internet and did I know the 4Cs? I can't wait to see it and be engaged to this wonderful boy. Only a few more weeks

ETA: I am 27, he is 28.

6. Hubby Researched and picked diamond but I picked setting

With myself being the guy and currently going through this process... I vote #6. She knows that I'm looking and we've talked about what type of diamond she wants. To me the setting just seems like something very personal, something that I'd like the both of us to go through together. 29 for myself and 30 for her.

#9.  My best friend went with him.  We had done some shopping before so he had an idea of what I liked.  We were 18 and 21.  That was 13 years ago.

I researched it all and picked the stone and setting. BF researched some, but basically left it up to me. He joined in on the final decision process, which was basically saying ok to the things I liked! We're almost engaged. We're both 25.

eta: well, now that I think about it, he really did influence the setting I chose. I would have had a more elaborate setting than what I'm getting if he hadn't really wanted a more simple solitaire. So we compromised witha simple solitaire with a small unique flare!

I was 23 and he was 25...
I told him that I liked a pear shape and that was all I had to do with it.  He went to a jewelry stoe that his mom had heard about through her work and he picked it out himself.  We had been dating for (1 week shy of) 5 years and I was surprised!

#2 for my original ring, and #11 for my current set.  He was 22 and I was 18 when we got engaged.  Which is even scarier now that my daughter is 14!

other:  When I got engaged originally in 1980 my then fiance and I went to some jewelry stores and looked at rings and picked out the diamond and setting together.  We were educated (somewhat) mostly about color and clarity.  No one back then even mentioned cut.  My upgraded diamond (which should be here tomorrow-yeah!) and setting was totally researched by me.  My DH knows how particular I am and he would not presume to try to pick out anything for me.  If it hadn't been for PS, I never would have found Whiteflash or Maytal Hoftman who made my setting.

No e-ring, took me year and a half to decide on an eternity wedding band. I bought it with our money.

This is kind of in the "other" category. DH researched and picked the stone and had it set in a solitaire, then upon presenting the ring, said that I could pick whatever setting I wanted, but he wanted to propose wit ha set ring so I could be suprised and stil lsport the after the proposal - what a BRIGHT idea! I was SO HAPPY with that!!!

So, technically, he picked tthe ring and setting but let me change it - it doesn't really fit in with any of the categories, exactly..

Age at engagement: me -- 26, him -- 28

He initially wanted it to be a surprise, so we did a little of every category!
1) I went looking with a friend, tried thiings on, and had her tell him what shape and settings I liked.
2) I thought I wanted a cushion so he did some research and looked for a while, had some trouble finding a good one, and finally let me in on the search.
3) I decided I wanted an oval instead, searched online til I found one... had it called in and we went to see it.
4) He took it from there and had it set (albeit something I'd chosen previously), then surprised me with the proposal.

I'm a guy so none of the choices applied to me. I voted for the one that most closely resembled our situation.

We were both 26. She told me the shape and color quality she wanted. Apparently the color is a cultural thing. She knew nothing else about diamonds other than they were shiny. I at least knew about carat and clarity. Did almost all my research here cuz I didn't like what else was on the internet. Learned about cut and then I decided what balance of all the 4 factors to get. I picked the setting too on my own.
