I want to ask your opinions on which diamond is a better value.

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-2432866.htm#
http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-2362006.htm#

One is an H VS2 0.511 the other is a G VS1 0.50

I am thinking about pairing it with

http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/Laureato--Half-Round-Shank_689.htm

What do you think?? Am planning to propose soon, so need your help and advice.

any other setting you think is good??

Ideally at whiteflash coz I'm keeping it simple and buying from one vendor...unless another setting is really nice.
Hint: She doesn't like very elaborate settings.

thanks in advance!!!!

The H VS2 is slightly larger for $400 dollars less.  You will not see the dif between the clarity or the color between the two that you picked.  I love the ring that you picked.  I would go with the H and save the money.  I also prefer the IS (I love edge to edge red).  They will both be the creme de la creme of diamonds.  Save the money.  You will not see the dif between the two at all.

Both stones are great!  As far as the setting goes, are you getting yellow gold? Is this what she has asked for? If so, then we can only look at the ones that come in YG. I like the fine line and sleek line solitaires better, but they may only come in platinum. I'll look again once you confirm if you are looking only at yellow gold.

Well actually, I think she likes white gold or platinum. But she has also said that it was up to me. I just want to give her the prettiest setting I can afford. I was also looking at the ones you mentioned - and I think they're very nice too. was actually looking at them before I considered the laureato. I really can't see the actual settings personally that's why I am asking around here. I actually stumbled on to previous posts about the laureato in platinum. If I can get the laureato in platinum, what do you think? Appreciate your help.

Hello MDME:

Since you are being practical here and are shopping "for the prettiest setting you can afford I would like to bring this option to your attention:

www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-2432790.htm

It's a .483 ct. A-Cut-Above,($1110.00) G Color, Si-1 (eye-clean clarity). I like this option for 2 reasons. There is minimal diameter difference between the .483 and the 2 stones you listed. It is a very nice si-1 (eye clean) stone which will get you the biggest bang for your buck while keeping it in the (G) color range.

If you decide to go with this stone, realize you are getting a premium diamond and because you dipped under that half carat mark (BARELY) you are saving yourself $350 bucks from the .51 H ($1553) and almost $900 bucks from the .50 G,VS1($1995).

The diameter difference is very minimal The diameter measurement of the .483 I mention is 5.07-5.11, The H stone you listed is 5.19-5.22, and the G VS1 is  5.13-5.16 (Very small potatoes if you ask me)

By dipping just a little under the Half carat mark you will be saving yourself anywhere from $350-$900 and you get to stay in the higher color range going with the .483 (G)

Money well saved towards the additional cost for the "Prettiest Setting You Can Afford".

Take a look and consider it. I think it's a great option considering the 2 candidates you listed and might prove to be a savvy purchase to help shell out the extra bucks for that stunner setting you are interested in.

Good Luck and let us know what you do..

thanks for the advice. it is very much appreciated. I really wanted to go at least the 50 point mark for it's appraisal value. (she was already very happy with a 0.28 HoF that we saw. (lucky for me) She has small hands and doesn't like a big stone. So I thought of trying to find a compromise of value (value for money), appraisal value, size, and quality. I really don't want to go below a VS2, though I know you are right when you say there are SI1's that are very eye clean. I actually thought about the dipping right below the 50 point threshold which translate to better price/point ratio but she is worth it (and much more really).

Now, regarding the settings, do you have suggestions? Right now my options range from 600+ platinum "sleek" and "fine" stuff from WF, or the ~975 laureato (if there is one in platinum/WG). I also saw this and think it might be okay:

http://www.adiamor.com/R-1072-R2784-1.htm

I don't know how to proceed with buying the setting from one vendor and buying the stone from another. I really don't want to do it if I can.

await your response. thanks again.

The Fine Line. http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/Fine-Line-Platinum-Solitaire_691.htm very delicate.

Or WF shared prong, maybe of 8 or 10 3 pointers.  Like http://www.signedpieces.com/item.cfm?item_id=3658&show_metal=18K%20White%20Gold

Channel setting is nice, but the metal on the sides usually makes them at least 3 mm, and a half carat stone is just a little more than 5 mm, so that might be a bit thick.

Kinda a shame to spend money on plat when you can spend it on sparkle.

mdme, I really like the H VS2 because it is larger and a good value. I just bought an H VS1 for the same reason!

I'll be honest and tell you that I do not like the Laureto setting you mentioned. If it is $975 in yg, then it'll be a lot more in platinum, and I don't think it is worth it.

By all means get a setting from WF. They have a nice selection and it will make your life SO much easier to do it that way! I think the fine line and sleek line are classic and elegant settings and very safe choices. My brother-in-law actually bought the $400 plain tiffany style setting (under $500) and it was quite lovely, too.
