Hi all, OK, it is coming down to the final decision (the metal for the setting). I am debating the pros and cons of white gold vs. platinum. The difference is $200 (not a lot) but I am already a little over budget, so I guess every dollar counts! The question is: My girlfriend is a redhead with very fair (and very sensitive) skin. Things like certain sunscreen and frangranced lotions can cause her to break out. I did give her a white gold necklace (I believe it was an 18ct white chain and 18ct white pendant) and she wears it daily with no problems as far as skin reaction. Would it be safe to assume, in this case, that she would have no problem with a 14ct ring that she would wear daily? Are there any women (or guys) out there with very sensitive skin who have either had a problem (or had no problem) with a white gold ring? Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as the jewler is awaiting my decision. Thanks so much!!!! -David

Fingers and ears tend to be better indicators of a metal allergy. With what you've described - a fair redhead with sensitive skin - I think I'd just spend the extra money and go with platinum. You'll avoid the allergy issue altogether. Just my .02c. Scintillating...

My skin is very sensitive and most rings are gold. I've never had a problem with them and always wear them. But it's getting to the point where I can't wear my 14k, 18k, or 24k earrings for more than a few hours at a time.

oshinbreez, I'm sorry to hear that!!! Do you have any platinum jewelry, and, if so, can you wear it for longer periods than you can the gold or white gold? Thanks, David

Well I'm a platinum girl so you know what my answer is! I too have very sensitive skin including a tendency for dermatitis on my hands but have never had a problem with my platinum rings. Just be aware though that it will also make a difference to the cost of the wedding bands which can be quite significant especially in the man's ring with the larger amount of metal required. I got a bit of a nasty shock when we went to get our wedding bands made! It's okay if you budget for it of course but I grossly underestimated the difference in cost. Congratulations on your engagement!

Thanks, David ![]() I don't have any platinum, so I don't know how it would be. I seem to stick with gold since I do know I won't have a problem with it. I also prefer yellow gold over white gold....seems to go better with my skin tone. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

From a healthcare provider - go for platinum. Simply because she has not reacted to a necklace does NOT mean a ring will be ok. The primary metal allergy out there is nickel. Many women only discover that a piece of jewelry has nickel when they develop an erruption. If she is a sensitive skin woman, I personally don't think it is worth taking a chance on something you want her to wear everyday! Munchkin

I do have a sensitivity to nickel in earrings, even some sterling silver bothers my ears after a bit, but I have never had a problem with yellow or white gold.

I can't wear sterling silver either. Back when I was in HS my parents bought me a gorgeous gold watch. After wearing it a few days, the underside of my wrist started breaking out everytime I put it on. I guess the clasp wasn't real gold. I tried clear polish on it, but that didn't help. I ended up giving it back to mom.

Have you looked at palladium?

If you go with yellow gold - it should not be a problem (especially if you stick to 18 K). For white gold insist on a nickle free alloy - from a repuatable jeweler. Palladium is also a good choice to save $. Personally, I think a redhead and yellow gold would look good. Perry

go for the platinum. i have very sensitive skin as well...i have to use "sensitive skin" products and hypo allergenic products. i can wear gold rings...sometimes. the platinum rings are never a problem. as for earrings...my platinum earrings can be worn for days at a time, but i can only wear gold earrings for afew hours...

I chose platinum because I occasionally react to white gold. I cannot wear a white gold ring for long periods of time...my skin gets all itchy and bumpy. it is gross. I'm happy to report that I've had absolutely NO problem with my platinum ering. I wear it daily, and take it off when I sleep and shower...and I've had no reaction at all. |
