I've seen it mentioned here a few times. Does it typically affect both the man and woman, or just the woman? Does it only come into play when her friends/co-workers are getting bigger diamonds? What other factors result in this?

thanks!

Go Blue 99......Welcome to PS

Diamond Shrinkage is not affected by sex.  i.e., both men and women can become afflicted.  It is actually part of a broader disorder called DOCD (Diamond Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).  I have researched and documented this disorder numerous times on PS.    In case you have not seen this, here it is for your reading pleasure..........
*********************************************************************************************

Diamond Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (DOCD), is an illness many of us suffer from on this forum.  DOCD, discovered by Dr. Brillianteering in the early 1900's, is a manifestation of mental anomolies when perfectly sane individuals become the owners of high quality diamonds and the settings those diamond sit in.  What typically occurs for an accurate DOCD diagnosis is euphoria upon the purchase of a nice gem or setting, followed by self doubt, and ultimately downright concern that the purchased stone or setting has somehow magically changed in appearance or shrunk while the owner slept.

While there are no known medications available to combat DOCD, many people have reported the symptoms are reduced or completely eliminated by purchasing larger, higher quality diamonds, or by visiting chain jewelry stores, such as Zales or Kay, or by having lunch with a friend who has jewelry of poorer quality than the DOCD sufferer.

Cheers!!!!

Hee hee....I've never heard of it inflicting men....

I don't think it's so much from seeing what others have...I think it's more of a "familiarity breeds contempt" kinda thing.....

Well...maybe "contempt" isn't the right word...

Hello Widget..........My name is Rod and I most certainly have been afflicted with DOCD, including the shrinkage part and I am a man.  I also know other men who have become afflicted.  Perhaps, we keep it more to ourselves, but let me assure you, there are men sufferers out there.........LOL

Hmmm.... "familiarity breeds.... restlessness? discontent?" A subset of the better-known "grass is always greener" syndrome, maybe.

So far my fiance seems to be quite satisfied with the size of my ring (enjoys making comments about using it as a shield or umbrella if ever necessary)... so no male-DSS here. My personal DSS cure is the ultrasonic cleaner... by the time I pop it in, run a cycle or two, and put it back on my finger... I'm transfixed all over again!

Oops....Sorry Rod!

I guess I was thinking of EDSS (Engagement Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome).  And when I referred to "men" I was thinking of PYHs ( Poorer Young Husbands)

I hope this also doesn't pertain to body parts after you get married.

Absolutely, and aren't you glad too.  There is, in my opinion, comfort in numbers!!!!!!

It can happen whenever, and I think it might be influenced by others around her, though that is not always what spurns it.  Some women never really fall prey to it, others have it all the time.  There is no real cure!!!!
