Hey everyone!! I am a new member here. I have really gotten alot of great advice from all the threads that I have read so I decided to join! My question is this. I am considering purchasing a diamond engagement ring on e-bay and the ring was appraised by Christopher Cable in West Virginia. My question for you all out there is this, has anyone worked with him before and if so, how realiable are his appraisals? Anyone that could help me on this would be greatly appreciated. Angela ![]()

Bamgela, welcome to the forum. It looks like Christopher Cable is not in business anymore. He used to be listed as Gemologist Appraiser in Yellow Pages for Charleston WV but not anymore and his old business phone number is not listed either... Pricescope |

Ok.... the ring that I was looking at was appraised by him in 2002, so is there anything in the past that anyone knows about?

Hi Angela, I would definately get a written" money back" return privilege if you are purchasing a diamond ring on Ebay sight unseen. Then take it to a qualified independent appraiser ASAP. It wouldn't matter to me who did the appraisal. It's coming from the seller. After all, it's your hard earned money. www.metrojewelryappraisers.com Jeff Averbook, G.G. |

I think appraisals also 'expire' per se, and I think I heard somewhere that it should be updated every year or two (although I could be making that up in my head!). If there has been damage to the stone in the interim then the value may change. You could consider asking for a newer appraisal, but if I were you I would rather go for the earlier advice given in this post - go for the written money back guarantee, find an appraiser near me (there is a section for that on this website - finding one myself would make me more confident that it was not just a friend of the person selling it), and then decide if I wanted the stone. You never really know until you see it - it can look great on paper, and then look yucky in person. Written money back - definitely!
