Hi everyone;
I found a pear shaped diamond for a solitaire pendent. I was wondering if I could get your opinions on it please. Its pear .91 Very good cut, H VS2 EGL certified the measurements are 7.18X5.23X3.80 the depth is 72.7 and the table is 63. It is not a bad price so I am wondering if there is something not right about it. I found it on one site but am hoping that another can get it in b/c they offer fiancing on there purchases . Does anyone know if this is done and if so is it looked down on? Thanks a lot

Welcome

Here is a carat weight to mm chart which may help you.

http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=17578

It is rather deep and will look more the size of a .7 carat, the reason the price is probably cheaper is because it is graded by EGL.  Is it EGL USA?  If so they are the best of the EGL labs, but some EGL labs have the rep of being softer on grading, for example an H VS2 could actually be a J SI2 in reality.....so you need to figure that into your pricing and make sure you are getting what you are paying for.

Now, fancy cuts - especially pears - can't always be judged by the numbers, if you wanted to follow up on this diamond, try to look at it first and make the sale contingent on having an independant appraisal during the return period so you can make sure the diamond checks out.

Lastly, don't go by " very good" , " premium" etc for diamond cut.  These are often labels used by vendors and don't always mean a thing.  This diamond is probably listed with different vendors by the cutting houses on their databases, which means it is a virtual stone and the vendor will have to call it in.  What isn't done is to enquire about a diamond with one vendor, get him to work for you and call in the diamond etc, then cut the rug out from under him by buying that stone from another vendor.  But if it is advertised at more than one vendor, go with the vendor you feel most comfortable with, but make sure they aren't a " drop shipper" where the diamond is set and sent to you and the vendor doesn't even see the diamond.  Look very carefully before pulling the trigger.  There are many good vendors out there who should be able to give you the service you want and help you to find the best diamond for you.

Best of luck.

Hi Everyone;
I found a new one that I hope is better but I wanted to see what you all thought. It is a pear shape again: .74 carats H SI1 GIA certified it is 8.19x5.39x2.89 the length to width ratio is 1.54, the Depth is 54.2 and the table is 51. thanks a lot everyone.
She was hoping to get one around 1 carat so I hope this one will look bigger then it actually is.

Here is the chart which helps with proportions for pears etc.

http://diamonds.pricescope.com/fnc3.asp

I think this looks better than the other one - but I am no expert on pears.  It looks like it is an average cut at best going by the chart, however it will look bigger for it's weight, I just don't know how much you might lose with performance with that shallow depth and very small table....Best thing would be to ask the vendor how it looks, the colour, clarity and cert are good and as I said before you can't always judge fancy shapes by the numbers and it might be a pretty pear.  Also the vendor might be able to send you pictures so you can get a better idea of how it looks.  Do you know the girdle thickness?  Make sure it isn't too thin or a durability issue, but as it is for a pendant, once set it shouldn't be a problem if so.
