any ideas on this besides using a needle to pry it loose? I''ve tried that, not working.

I have tried using oil or glycerine to soak the chain. Then spread it out on a bench table etch and get 2 point skewers or satay stick and basicly use the point end of the sticks a bit like chope sticks to get ''into'' the knots.
Works for me!

I''ve always had luck putting it on a flat surface. I actually use earring posts instead of pins. I work it gently pulling ever so slighty. Once it''s got an open hole and I can see where the trouble is, I hold it upright in my hand. And take the earring post to unknot it. Has worked for me every time. Takes some patience though, good luck!!!

I sort of use Kaleigh''s technique...GENTLY wiggling or putting something like a pin and seeing where I can move it...this is painstaking but I have always been able to get the knots out this way, and I even enjoy it like a puzzle trying to get it out!

greg is the knot king...he can get all my odd jewelry knots out...but if i am on my own, i put it on the table and use a safety pin or needle to just try to ''spread'' the knot a bit and get some space in there and then i can kind of tickle it open a bit. but it requires patience and i typically don''t have that, and my darling hubby does!!

good luck!

I too usually get a needle and then get my husband to unknot it, because his patience is not virtual.

I do it like Mara said and it usually works. I did one time give up on one and took it to the jeweler and she said she did not have a clue how I got it so messed up but she had to take the end ring off.Have no idea how it got like that just laying around in the jewelry box.She scolded me so now I have a box made for chains(got it from ebay) to hang with an elastic piece going accross to hold them.It works better, they still get tangled but have not had a knot yet!!!

My technique sounds similar to that of the rest of you who are patient :). I shake the chain gently and then use a needle. I, also, often become engrossed in the process of undoing the tangled chain. It is relaxing and mindless for me, like knitting, but keeps me occupied ;-).

Back in my retail days, folks would come into our store all the time thinking tht we had a special "machine" to get the knots out of their chains.

Those machines were called "safety pins."

AGBF I too find untangling necklaces soothing and relaxing! Every other time I visit my Mom I spend time organizing and straightening all her jewelry, including unknotting her necklaces. To me it would really bug me how she just jumbles everything together. I have given her jewelry organizers (she likes the trays that fit into a drawer) and it has helped somewhat, but not completely.
