I am purchasing my gf an e-ring and have no idea what size ring to get. Its a total surprise and she doesnt have any friends or family that i could ask without tipping her off. She is 5'6", 127lbs and wears a size 8 shoe. If anything I would say her fingers are slightly on the thin side, but not too thin. I am getting her a platinum solitaire setting so i think resizing wont be too tough. Should i go with a 6.5 just to be safe?

Thanks!

does she wear any rings or better yet have any in her jewelry box? There is really no guessing, I am sorry to say.

Some rings can be resized, some cant. stay away from eternity band styles.

eta- you could just buy the stone with a jeweler's temporary setting and go to get it set into a ring sometime after the proposal.

Thanks for your post.

She has no other rings that I could really sample from, she doesnt wear any! A coworker of mine who is about the same size as her (but thinner looking fingers) just told me she is a 4.75. If i purchase a 6.5 plain tiffany style band and god forbid she is a 5, can a jeweler resize down 1.75 sizes?

Thanks!

Hmmm... my initial thought (based on your description of her) would be to go with the 6.5. It seems possible she'll end up needing it sized down a bit, but I believe sizing down tends to be easier than sizing up, so 6.5 would be safe. But I'm sure there are experts on here who could tell you more about that!

Does she have any engaged friends who may have let her try on their ring at any point? You could always check with them to see what their guess would be, based on that. Or maybe her mom or a sister? Any way of setting up that sort of situation with one of her coworkers or friends?

Anyway, congratulations and good luck!

ETA - I'm 5'5", 130lbs, size 9 shoe, and have large hands with long narrow fingers - ring size 5.25
My friend is 5'6", 120lbs, size 8 shoe, and has small hands with shorter fingers - ring size 6.5
It really does vary!

I was almost exactly that size in my 20's and I wore a 4 3/4. I think 6 1/2 may be too big if she is thin and has slender fingers. I'd go with 6 max. She's not going to be able to wear it anyway if it is too big or too small, so it probably will have to be sized one way or the other.

You could always give her a simple solitaire setting for the proposal and then select a new setting together.

Is she a deep sleeper? My boyfriend joked that he had or will measure my finger while I sleep because he wants it to be a surprise and I want to be involved.

Ring sizes/finger sizes really do vary, and usually both hands are a different size. I'm right handed so my right hand ring finger is 1 full size bigger than my left hand ring finger. If she's left handed, it could be the other way around. Or it might not matter at all...

are you sure you don't trust any of her friends to help you out? maybe one of them could have her try on one of her rings, sneakily, of course, and let you know if it was big or small?
