If a setting says it takes a 5.2 mm diamond, how close does the actual diamond have to be to fit the setting head? I've heard that a diamond can be 0.2 mm of the setting specs and fit. Does this sound right? On a related note, if a setting says it takes a 1 carat diamond (say its 6.5 mm), how far off from one carat can you be to fit the setting? Thanks.

A jeweler could probably answer this best, but I can tell you that they fit my 1.24 carat diamond in a half-bezel setting made for a 1 carat with no problem. My jeweler did say he didn't think we could have gone any larger.
